A wheel-acting force measuring system for measuring for measuring force generated by a wheel having a road contacting surface is provided. The system includes an axle having a brake disk attachment portion and a spindle portion extending outwardly from the brake disk attachment portion to which the wheel is mounted, and a stress detecting sensor embedded in the spindle portion at a position between the brake disc attachment portion and a plane perpendicular to the road contacting surface of the wheel. In an embodiment there is further provided a brake caliper having a brake caliper angle defined by a caliper fixing axis and a wheel traveling direction, and the stress detecting sensor is mounted substantially at the brake caliper angle with respect to the wheel traveling direction and parallel to the caliper fixing axis.

A method of predicting fatigue failure in a filled polymeric material is provided. The method involves the calculation of stress at the region of highest stress using an equation which includes as parameters, regression coefficients of the stress vs. modulus obtained from a finite element analysis. Once the regression coefficients are obtained, there is no further need to perform a finite element analysis. The calculated stresses are numerically integrated in a damage equation using a Monte Carlo method, using a cumulative model to estimate when failure will occur. The method has been tested in the case of temperature stress loading of a solid propellant rocket motor.

A tool condition monitoring system monitors the power consumption of a tool during performance of a cyclical task. The system monitors a plurality of characteristics of the power consumption and diagnoses the condition of the tool based upon the plurality of characteristics. A rule base of the plurality of characteristics is generated in a learning mode by acquiring a tool of known condition for a plurality of cycles. In monitor mode, the system monitors the power consumption of a tool and diagnosis the condition of the tool by indexing the rule base based upon the plurality of characteristics monitored. In addition, a method is disclosed wherein the band may be modified for accommodating tool wear and avoiding nuisance detection such that the system can keep monitoring in tool's lifetime.

The present invention is a testing apparatus and method for automatically confirming the presence of all of at least one ring within a groove of an article of manufacture, such as a piston of a vehicle engine, during assembly of the article of manufacture. An air flow is applied on the groove, and the resulting amount of air flow through the groove depends on the presence of each of the at least one ring within the groove. This resulting amount of air flow through the groove is measured for determining whether all of the at least one ring is present within the groove. If any of the at least one ring is absent from the groove, an alarm indication of this undesired situation is provided. Use of a microcontroller allows for calibration of the components in the testing apparatus of the present invention and allows for monitoring for proper calibration of such components. Such calibration and monitoring by the microcontroller results in reliable confirmation of the presence of all of the at least one ring within the groove of the article of manufacture.

Automated systems and methods for processing substrates are described. An automated processing system includes: a vacuum chamber; a substrate support located inside the vacuum chamber and constructed and arranged to support a substrate during processing; and a substrate alignment detector constructed and arranged to detect if the substrate is misaligned as the substrate is transferred into the vacuum chamber based upon a change in a physical condition inside the system. The substrate alignment detector may include a vibration detector coupled to the substrate support. A substrate may be transferred into the vacuum chamber. The position of the substrate may be recorded as it is being transferred into the vacuum chamber. Misalignment of the substrate with respect to the substrate support may be detected. The substrate may be processed. The processed substrate may be unloaded from the vacuum chamber. The position of the processed substrate may be recorded as it is being unloaded from the vacuum chamber. Any substrate misalignment may be compensated for based upon the difference in the recorded substrate positions.

The door moving mechanism engages and rotates the vehicle door when the door moving mechanism is activated. The assembly enables the door moving mechanism to be movably positioned into a functional position relative to a specific door of the variety of vehicle doors having a specific axis of rotation and enables the doors having a specific axis of rotation and enables the door moving mechanism to be repositioned in a similar functional position relative to a different vehicle door having a different axis of rotation.
