A wavelength selective optical fiber coupler having various applications in the field of optical communications is disclosed. The coupler is composed of dissimilar waveguides in close proximity. A light induced, permanent index of refraction grating is recorded in the coupler waist The grating filters and transfers energy within a particular range of wavelengths from a first waveguide to a second waveguide. Transversely asymmetric gratings provide an efficient means of energy transfer. The coupler can be used to combine or multiplex a plurality of lasers operating at slightly different wavelengths into a single fiber. Other embodiments such as a dispersion compensator and gain flattening filter are disclosed.

The enclosure may be used to secure to a portion of an optical fiber, fiber optic device and/or device, and/or may be used to encase a portion or all of an optical fiber, fiber optic device and/or device.

An optical fiber add/drop filter includes a first and second elongate photosensitive optical fiber, each optical fiber having opposed first and second ends and including a core and a cladding. The cladding of the first optical fiber is optically coupled to the cladding of the second optical fiber at a coupler. A first fiber Bragg grating is etched into a second end of the first fiber for converting light propagating in a first direction through either of the core of cladding of the first fiber into light propagating in an opposite direction through the other of said core and cladding of said second fiber. A second fiber Bragg grating is etched into a first end of the second fiber for converting light propagating in a first direction either of the core or cladding of the second fiber into light propagating in an opposite direction through the other of the core and cladding of the second fiber. The first and second fiber Bragg gratings are located to opposite sides of the coupler. The add/drop filter of the present invention may be cascaded to form an optical add/drop multiplexer.

A twin coupler system includes first and second optical couplers that couple a multimode pump fiber into a double-clad active primary fiber. The pump fiber carries multimode pump power from a multimode source. The primary fiber, on the other hand, carries optical information signals on the single mode core that are amplified through the pump power. A system and method for manufacturing the twin coupler system constructs the first coupler by preparing first portions of the primary and pump fibers for coupling and performing fusion and tapering operations on the primary and pump fibers at the first portions, and constructs the second coupler by preparing second portions of the primary and pump fibers for coupling and performing fusion and tapering operations on the primary and pump fibers at the second portions. The fusion and tapering operations at the second portions are dependent upon the fusion and tapering operations performed at the first portions so as to achieve a maximum coupling efficiency of the pump power from the pump fiber to the primary fiber for the entire twin coupler system.

An optical switching assembly selectively connects an optical source and a detector to at least one fiber optic device. The assembly includes first and second groups of optical paths, and first and second optical switches. The first optical switch selectively connects the optical source to one end of the first group of optical paths, and the second optical switch selectively connects the detector to the one end of the second group of optical paths. The assembly laos includes a plurality of junctions, each having a lead associated therewith, and one or more of the leads are connected to the fiber optic device. The junctions connect the other end of the first group of optical paths and the other end of the second group of optical paths to the lead to facilitate the testing of the fiber optic device.

Advantageous methodologies are disclosed for embedding periodic patterns in optical waveguide elements such as optical fibers. Polarization independence in an elongated waist region of an add/drop coupler can be established by measuring polarization characteristics during fusion and elongation, and controlling the elongation to impart a cross-sectional shape, such as a hybrid dumbbell-ellipsoid. Polarization dependence can also be minimized by angular deformation of the elements along the light transmissive axis. To write a pattern, an element having potential photosensitivity is markedly photosensitized in a hydrogen or deuterium environment pressurized to about 1000 to 5000 psi and a scanning UV beam that is transmitted through a photo mask and impinges on the coupler waist as the in-diffused gas is constantly replenished. Dimensional variations in the element which can affect spectral bandwidth are sensed by writing a preliminary test pattern in the element and then locally measuring the spectral properties of the test pattern and adjusting the local levels of background index of refractions so that the modal index of refraction is substantially constant along the length of the pattern. A relatively wide scanning writing beam tracks on a narrower waveguide element despite positional imprecision and temporal shifting by using a feedback signal derived from fluorescence induced in the element. To apodize the grating in accordance with a selected function, a constant power beam is directed through a rotating half-wave plate and divided by a polarizing beam splitter into two beams having oppositely varying DC amplitude characteristics. The two beams are separately varied to produce the desired apodization profile of the grating.

A wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) utilizes cascaded interferometric devices, where the two output branches of interferometric devices in each new stage are each coupled to an additional stage of interferometric devices having the same wavelength separation or channel spacing, which suppresses the sidelobes of the signals from preceding stage of interferometric devices. In one embodiment, the interferometric devices are unbalanced Mach-Zehnder Interferometers.

Fused biconical tapered couplers formed from the pulling of heated optical fibers have controllable coupling ratios by dynamically adjusting the heat intensity and pull speed during fabrication. Fiber coupler fabrication begins by arranging two optical fibers, heating the optical fibers using a heat source a predetermined distance from the optical fibers, and pulling the optical fibers at an initial pulling velocity as the heated optical fibers soften. The heat source is moved away from the optical fibers and the pulling velocity is selectively reduced in response to a substantial change in the detected coupling ratio. Changes in the coupling ratio are controlled by selectively reducing the pulling speed and the heat intensity to a point where the pulling of the optical fibers may be halted, and the heat removed, without a substantial change in the detected coupling ratio. The coupling ratio may be monitored at different wavelengths for fabrication of wideband couplers and wavelength division multiplexers.

A multiport optical waveguide interferometer is provided which comprises at least two N.times.N couplers arranged in series on an array of fibers and separated by a short region such that the phase shift between the couplers is approximately equal to .pi.. A method for making such an interferometer comprises forming such couplers, for instance by a fused taper method with appropriate twist, where the fused, tapered and twisted zone is longer than usual and wherein the couplers are formed in series within such zone, separated by short regions of between 1-2 mm, and adjusted to achieve the flattest possible wavelength response.
