Abstract: A networking environment includes a first node and a second node configured as Ethernet Virtual Private Networking (EVPN) peers on an EVPN subnet that is coupled to a Layer 3 VPN over a core network. The first node receives a first multicast join request from a third node in the core network, the first multicast join request including a source address and multicast group address of a source of a multicast stream. The first node determines that the source address and the multicast group address for the source are behind the EVPN subnet at the second node. The first node sends to the second node, a control plane join request message that includes a receiver identifier that identifies the third node as a receiver of the multicast stream, the receiver identifier enabling the second node to forward the multicast stream directly into the core network to the third node.

Abstract: A method comprises, at a first router configured to perform Bit Index Explicit Replication (BIER) for forwarding of multicast packets in a network, storing configuration information that indicates that the first router belongs to multiple subdomains of a BIER domain, and is able to forward the multicast packets for a virtual private network on the multiple subdomains. The method further comprises, during an auto-discovery procedure, generating an auto-discovery message to include an auto-discovery route and route attributes that indicate the multiple subdomains, and sending the auto-discovery message to a second router of the virtual private network the network.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a first computer networking device executes an election algorithm to determine whether at least the first computer networking device or a second computer networking device is responsible for forwarding, to at least one receiving device, communications addressed to a specified group of computing devices. The first computer networking device may further store first data indicating that the first computer networking device is responsible for forwarding the communications. However, in response to the first computer networking device determining that it is no longer receiving the communications, it may store second data indicating that the first computer networking device is no longer responsible for forwarding the communications and may send, to the second computer networking device, third data indicating that the first computer networking device is not receiving the communications.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a broadcast, unknown-unicast, or multicast (BUM) frame from a connected device, where the BUM frame is associated with a broadcast domain, determining a segment within the broadcast domain associated with the device, adding to the BUM frame a segment identifier that uniquely identifies the segment within the broadcast domain, and causing the BUM frame to be delivered to one or more recipient network apparatuses in a network associated with the broadcast domain, where the segment identifier added to the BUM frame is configured to be used by the one or more recipient network apparatuses to selectively forward the BUM frame to connected devices that are associated with segment identifier.

The method includes receiving a network communication at a first network device coupled to a first network and a second network, determining whether to forward the network communication into the first network over a logical connection, and, if the network communication is to be forwarded into the first network over the logical connection, forwarding the network communication into the first network over the logical connection. The logical connection is associated with a second network address in the second network. The determining is based, at least in part, on a determination, as to whether the first network device and the second network device are coupled to the logical connection, that uses the first network address and the second network address.

Abstract: First, a packet may be received by a first provider edge device from a first customer edge device locally connected to the first provider edge device. Then the first provider edge device may replicate the packet to a second customer edge device locally connected to the first provider edge device and encapsulate the packet with an address of the first provider edge device. Next, the first provider edge device may transmit the encapsulated packet to a second provider edge device. Then, the second provider edge device may determine from the determined address of the first provider edge device, that the first provider edge device is not locally connected to a third customer edge device. The second provider edge device may then replicate the packet to the third customer edge device in response to determining that the first provider edge device is not locally connected to the third customer edge device.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a device in a network assigns two multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) labels to a single flexible cross-connection maintained by the device for a plurality of endpoint. The device establishes an Ethernet virtual private network (EVPN) backup path to a peer router for the flexible cross-connection in part by exchanging the MPLS labels with the peer router. The device detects a communication failure that resulted from attempting to send a packet between a first one of the endpoints and a second one of the endpoints using local switching on the device and via the flexible cross-connection. The device sends the packet towards the second endpoint using the EVPN backup path to the peer router, after detecting the communication failure and without first using Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signaling to signal the communication failure to the peer router.

Abstract: A method for assisting media access control (MAC) address learning is disclosed. The method includes receiving, at a first provider edge (PE) device, a data packet from a core network, the data packet identifying an Ethernet Segment (ES) from which the data packet originated and identifying a first MAC address as the destination MAC address; determining, at the first PE device, whether the first PE device has an Ethernet connection in the ES identified by the data packet and whether the first PE device has learned the first MAC address; and, upon positive determination, sending an announcement message to the core network, the announcement message identifying the first MAC address.

Abstract: In one embodiment, when an ingress provider edge (PE) device of a computer network domain receives a frame at the ingress PE device destined to a destination media access control (MAC) address, it can determine whether the frame was received on a root or leaf Ethernet ingress segment, and also whether the destination MAC address is located via a root or leaf Ethernet segment. Accordingly, the ingress PE device may either drop or forward the frame based on the ingress Ethernet segment and destination MAC address Ethernet segment being either a root or a leaf, respectively.
