Abstract:
A brake actuator redirects pressurized air that compressed a parking brake spring to the other side of a piston upon release of the parking brake spring. The redirected air is clean air which removes contaminates and pushes them out a one-way check exhaust. A first embodiment of the brake actuator uses an external quick release valve to take exhaust air from a pressure chamber and direct it to the spring chamber. A second embodiment of the brake actuator uses the spring brake control valve to take exhaust air from the pressure chamber and direct it to the spring chamber. In each embodiment, the pressurized air pushes out the excess air past the one-way check exhaust, carrying all contaminates with it. The brake actuator can also advantageously be operated under water without the water entering the spring chamber.
Abstract:
The scuff and wall plate is formed by fusing a thermoplastic fiberglass-reinforced plastic scuff plate to a thermoplastic fiberglass-reinforced plastic wall liner by glass fiber blooming. The fusion blooming can be accomplished by vibration welding or high frequency welding. Because the scuff plate and wall liner are fused, a small lap area is all that is needed to keep the liner and scuff plate together.
Abstract:
A system for a vehicle includes a hollow axle, a wheel hub which surrounds the axle, bearings provided therebetween, at least one nut having a predetermined inner diameter mounted on an end of the axle, and a hub cap mounted to the wheel hub. An exciting element is mounted within the hub cap by a mounting wheel. A sensor member is mounted in the end of the axle and radially spaced from the exciting element. The sensor member has an outer diameter which is less than the inner diameter of the nut such that the wheel hub, the bearings, the nut, the hub cap, the exciting element and the mounting wheel can be removed without having to remove the sensor member from the axle.
Abstract:
A method of attaching a logistics rail to a trailer sidewall is disclosed. The trailer sidewall includes an inner skin, an outer skin, a member mounted between the inner and outer skins, and a core between the inner and outer skins. A vertical channel is formed between the inner skin and the member. The inner skin is cut to expose the channel. Thereafter, the logistics rail is inserted within the member. The logistics rail has a plurality of slots therethrough so that items can be attached to the trailer sidewall. Finally, the logistics rail is attached to the member.
Abstract:
A braking system for a vehicle includes a pressure relief valve which rids the -system of moisture and liquid therein. The braking system includes a controller which is in fluid communication with the vehicle brakes, an air source, and an air signal that is supplied by the application of the vehicle's brakes. The controller includes piston structure therein which can be moved relative thereto to selectively allow the air from the source to be supplied to the vehicle brakes when a preset air pressure acts against the piston. The piston has a sump therein for collecting any moisture or liquid present in the structure. In an embodiment, the valve includes a vent hole through the piston and a band or ring which overlies the vent hole. The band or ring is preferably positioned around a necked-down portion of the piston. In another embodiment, the sump is effectively eliminated by a plug which overlays the sump and the valve includes a vent hole through an upper portion of the piston and a spring-biased plunger. The band, ring or plunger is moved away from its engagement with the piston when the pressure acting against the piston becomes greater than a preset pressure to vent the moisture and liquid to the vehicle brakes. An upper portion of the piston may be concave to funnel any liquid or moisture present therein into the sump.
Abstract:
A novel trailer body design having a plurality of "dummy" splices thereon is provided by the present invention. The dummy splices are used to improve the aesthetics of a trailer body so that a subsequently performed repair of the body is not noticeable. The side walls of the body are formed from upper and lower panels, and a horizontal logistics member connected between the panels to join the panels together along the length of the body. The horizontal logistics member spaces the panels apart and includes a plurality of spaced apertures therethrough. The apertures align with the space so that equipment can be attached to the inside of the body. The dummy splices are vertically affixed to the outer surface of at least one of the panels and spaced apart from each other along the length thereof. Each vertical splice may be a metal or plastic plate or a decal secured to the outer surface of the panel. When a repair is performed on the trailer body due to damage of the side wall, the damaged portion of the panel, along with the adjacent dummy vertical splices, are cut out of the panel. A replacement wall section is inserted into the cutout and affixed to the remainder of the panel by conventional permanent splices. Because of the remaining dummy splices, the body does not look like it has been repaired.
Abstract:
A novel railcar includes a floor, upstanding side walls which are connected to the floor and a top. A no slack coupler is provided for coupling adjacent railcars together to form an articulated train. The railcar includes a landing gear having a flanged wheel beneath a forward portion thereof and a bi-directional bogie mounted beneath a rearward portion thereof. The landing gear and bogie can be used to support and move the railcar on railroad tracks. Structure is provided for attaching a dolly adaptor to a rear end of the railcar and for connecting a tractor to a front end of the railcar. The railcar can be easily detached from the remainder of the articulated train, moved off of the tracks and transported around a rail yard by the tractor and the dolly adaptor so that the railcar can be loaded at a dock. Thereafter, the railcar can be easily reattached into the train on the track.
Abstract:
A novel method is provided for forming a clear hole through a composite plate. In the present method, the hole is twice-punched by a punching apparatus. At least two plates can be joined together to form a wall of a trailer. Each composite plate is formed from top and bottom skins having a resilient core sandwiched therebetween. The bottom skin of one plate and the top skin of the adjacent plate each include an integrally formed skin extension which extends past the end of the respective cores and overlaps the respective top or bottom skin on the adjacent plate. To perform the method, the following steps are taken: The composite plates are placed adjacent to each other and the punching apparatus is engaged with the plate to be punched to compress the plate core material. The punching apparatus punches through the plate and skin to form a hole therethrough. The apparatus is then withdrawn from its engagement and the core is allowed to expand into the hole. Next, the apparatus is re-engaged with the plate and skin and compresses the core. The apparatus re-punches through the plate and skin in the same location as the first-punched hole to shear any excess material from within the hole. The punching apparatus is then re-withdrawn from its engagement. After being punching twice, the hole is clear and free of any interfering material. A rivet can be easily placed through the hole to join the plates together.
Abstract:
An anti-friction slider pad assembly for reducing the frictional resistance during sliding, longitudinal adjustment of a load support bed relative to an underlying frame structure in order to provide for adjustment of a longitudinal load distribution of the loaded bed on the frame structure, includes a seating or shoe structure for removably supporting the slider pad on the underlying frame structure in order to enable removal of the seat structure and pad therefrom as a unit for convenient replacement of the worn pad. The seat and pad preferably include respective coupling elements for securing the pad on the seat without separate fasteners. In a method for installing the anti-frictional pad, the pad is secured to the seat structure and thereafter the flanges of the seat structure guide a sidewise, lateral displacement of the pad and seat between the load bed and a suspension hanger on the underlying frame structure.
