The methods, apparatuses and devices utilize a new apparatus for forming a channel in a surface of the bone or bony structure segments or adjacent vertebra or a channel submerged within the bone or bony structure segments or adjacent vertebra. In more particular embodiments such apparatuses and methods including forming an arcuate channel and which channel can receive therein a curved rod or implant member, which also preferably is arcuate, and avoids the associated problems with prior cage or straight rod and screw systems. Also featured are systems, apparatuses and methods for repairing, replacing or augmenting the nucleus and/or annulus of a disc.

The present invention relates to devices and methods for altering the tissue in and around an intervertebral disc through localized hypothermia therapy to restore function of the disc and reduce pain. Hypothermia therapy is defined as the reduction of tissue temperature to below that of the equilibrium temperature. Target therapeutic temperatures and times are varied according to the desired treatment effect. Intended effects of hypothermia of the intervertebral disc include cellular disruption leading to cell death and or structural and chemical denaturation within the anulus fibrosus, nucleus pulposus, or nerve fibers, temporary or permanent deadening of the nerves within or surrounding the disc, induction of a healing response, angiogenesis, or accelerated degeneration and/or drying of the nucleus pulposus and/or anulus fibrosus. Various effects can be achieved by reaching different temperatures for differing periods of time or by the proximity of the hypothermia therapy device to the treatment target. Accordingly, it is an object of one or more the embodiments of the invention to provide hypothermic therapy to selected locations within an intervertebral disc utilizing a flexible and guidable cryogenic device.

Circuitry for a phase locked loop (PLL) includes a first frequency doubler; a first equalizer having an input coupled to an output of the first frequency doubler; a second frequency doubler having an input coupled to an output of the first equalizer; and a second equalizer having an input coupled to an output of the second frequency doubler and an output which is fed into the PLL. Each frequency doubler includes a first delay circuit having an input coupled to the input of the frequency doubler; and an XOR circuit having a first input coupled to an output of the delay circuit and a second input coupled to the input of the frequency doubler. The combination of the two frequency doublers in series quadruples the reference signal into the PLL, which allows the, PLL to have a smaller feedback divider ratio and a higher loop gain for reducing jitter. Advantageously, controls for the selection of the initial reference signal are provided.

A complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit that includes a clock recovery circuit. The clock recovery circuit automatically properly aligns a clock with data. A latch is used to perform the function of a flip-flop. Because the flip flop is essentially two latches, using the latch rather than the flip flop results in a circuit having one less latch. Consequently, the circuit has less propagation delay, which permits higher frequency operation. Use of the latch also reduces the load on the clock and saves power. Additionally, the clock recovery circuit uses differential logic, which decreases noise sensitivity and allows higher frequency operation.

An implantable linear actuator device for use in orthopedic correction procedures, the device comprising a housing including a first tubular portion and a second tubular portion, the second tubular portion slidably received in telescoping relationship within the first tubular portion; and a drive mechanism secured within the housing and connected between the first and second tubular portions, the drive mechanism including a main screw shaft rotatably journalled at one end in the first tubular portion and threadably connected at an opposite end to the second tubular portion; a one-way rotatable clutch engageable with the main screw shaft such that rotation of the clutch in one direction will effect rotation of the main screw shaft in the one direction but rotation of the clutch in an opposite direction will not rotate the main screw shaft; and a shape memory alloy component fixed between the clutch and the first tubular portion such that, upon application of heat, the component causes the clutch and the screw shaft to rotate in the one direction.
