摘要: A batch reading system for automatically reading documents such as tags or tickets having data marked thereon in the form of human readable characters which are also automatically readable by suitable apparatus, the system being capable of feeding documents which are curled, wrinkled, bent, and otherwise deformed or mutilated. The documents are fed from an input hopper by first feed means, which may be a vacuum belt, from which they are fed to a second vacuum belt on whose underside the tags are held and fed past an underlying automatic reading device. The documents which are properly read are each stripped from the overlying vacuum belt by a flipper arm into a discharge chute, while other tickets are fed past the discharge chute to a reject stacker. To accurately laterally position the documents being fed, one of their longitudinal edges is pressed against a reference surface. The documents are fed past the reading head in a direction transverse to the various lines of data recorded on the document, whereby each line of data is presented successively to the reading head. The system is also able to handle and properly feed intermixed documents of various lengths and widths.

摘要: Method and apparatus for central inventory control as particularly adapted for retail vending wherein all merchandise is made to carry a coded identifier ticket characteristic of the product. Upon sale of the product the identifier ticket may be removed and at periodic times all accrued identifier tickets can be processed through a label sorter and reader to compile data for input to a central computer which then provides various forms of inventory readout to the user entity. More particularly, the invention utilizes a form of identifier ticket adapted for gummed adhesion and tear-off from the product, and the removed identifier ticket is then processed in a sorting and reading apparatus to provide recorded as well as instantaneous output for input to an associated computer or other peripheral equipment. The ticket sorting apparatus consists of a hopper portion to receive tickets in bulk for subsequent mechanical feeding into a separating track after which the individual identifier tickets bearing binary coded digital marking are optically read with output data provided for computer usage. The separating track consists of an elongated belt conveyor, of critical width to accommodate identifier tickets, which includes a serially arranged plurality of separating flanges arrayed therealong to control passage of single identifier tickets therealong. Finally, after optical reading of the identifier tickets they are dropped into a common depository for collection, storage, etc.

摘要: Thin articles such as letters are conveyed over a supporting fluid layer formed against a track surface along which they move. This layer is built up by jets issuing from nozzles located on both sides of the track surface and opening flush with the latter. The nozzles are oriented towards the center line of the track with somme inclination in the direction of motion of the articles, in order that the velocity of the jets presents a longitudinal component parallel to this direction and a transverse component pointing towards the center of the track.

摘要: A selective imprinting machine of the type used for addressing mailed material, utilizing embossed card-sized media of the "credit-card" type having a matrix of perforations sensed for comparison against the master. The master is another perforated card with the perforations on both cards photoelectrically sensed. In one embodiment the cards move along a linear path, and in another they are carried on a rotating drum which also bears the master card. The media are placed on the drum by a rocker arm actuated by a cam driven by the drum, scanned simultaneously with the master for comparison and ejected tangentially from the drum to a receiver. A print signal is produced until inhibited by mismatch between the master and the individual embossed media. The elected media are imprinted against a receiving medium such as an envelope by a print roller, at the periphery of the drum, urged toward the periphery by a cam driven by the drum. The follower linkage for that cam has a movable link moved by an actuator in response to the absence of the print signal to disable the follower linkage. The cards are sensed by phototransistors, and the comparison between the individual card and the master is made by logic circuitry. The master has two hole locations for each hole location on the individual card, one hole location specifying presence of a hole on the individual card, and the other specifying absence of a hole on the individual card. A form is also shown having two receivers for the individual cards and a diverter operated in response to the logic circuitry to divert cards from the first receiver to the second.

摘要: An improved card reader for sensing and readout of Hollerith punched-hole cards. The reader senses the manual entry of a Hollerith card to turn on driving rollers which grasp and press the card inward into the mechanism. The leading edge of the punched card then comes into contact with a flange-head which is part of a strobe bar carriage. The pressure of the inwardly driven Hollerith card causes the front edge of the Hollerith card to press against the head and to initiate forward motion of the strobe bar carriage. The strobe bar carriage carries a linear bar with a series of precisionly spaced apertures in its base which are used to trigger a strobing signal as each column of the punched card passes over the read station. The read station puts out a set of signals indicative of the pattern of each column of the Hollerith card. When the last column of the Hollerith card is read, a reverse sensing photocell is triggered which drives the card backward out of the entry slot. A return spring retracts the strobe bar carriage back to its initial position adjacent the entry slot of the card reader. The strobe bar flange and carriage is made to contain a heavier mass than that of the Hollerith card and is at least of equal width to that of the width of the Hollerith card so that any ''''skewness'''' of the Hollerith card in the entry slot will be rectified when the edge of the Hollerith card is flatted against the strobe bar head. Further, the thrust of the Hollerith card will not cause bounce or jerk of the strobe bar carriage (which might lead to reading errors) but will merely accelerate the strobe bar carriage in a smooth fashion.

摘要: A reader assembly is disclosed for detecting recorded information carried by credit or identification cards. The reader assembly preferably includes a magnetic transducer for reading conventional magnetic codes. The transducer is moveably mounted in the top or cover plate of the reader assembly, which is hinged to permit ready access to the interior of the reader assembly, for emergency servicing or routine maintenance. A card transport mechanism is provided, which is preferably powered by a reversible D.C. motor. The transport mechanism is activated by insertion of a card into the reader assembly. The mechanism is adjustable to permit the reader to handle cards of varying thicknesses and widths.

摘要: This invention describes a high speed card handling system for writing and reading magnetically encoded information into and from a card. Registration of the card with respect to the heads and moving the card at a constant velocity is achieved by using an endlessly rotating belt that is skewed at an angle with respect to a fixed linear card guide. The endless rotating belt frictionally engages the card and moves the card from the read head to the write head. The endless belt being skewed with respect to the fixed guide continuously urges the moving card against the guide thereby maintaining registration of the card at all times.

摘要: A document handler for character recognition systems. The document handler comprises an input bin for insertion of documents, transport means for carrying the documents and an output bin for the reception of documents from the transport means. Means for sensing a document are provided adjacent the transport means for determining the location of the document on the transport means. The character recognition system includes means for reading the document at a predetermined location relative to the transport means. The movement of the transport means is controlled in accordance with the information generated by the sensing means and the character recognition system to maximize the speed of handling of the document and reading thereof.
