    Abstract: System and methods for optimizing wellbore tubular design are provided. Design parameters for a wellbore tubular component are determined based on different types of axial loads expected during a downhole operation. The design parameters include load conditions at load points along the tubular component. An equivalent axial load is calculated for each load point, based on the corresponding load conditions. Design limits for the different types of axial loads are determined based on associated design parameters. A counter-load pressure is determined for at least one load point selected for each type of axial load, based on the corresponding equivalent axial load for each load point and a corresponding design limit for each type of axial load. At least one of the design limits is adjusted for the different types of axial loads, based on the counter-load pressure of the selected load point for each type of axial load.

    Abstract: A modified tubular system for use in connection with the recovery of subsurface minerals and fluids. The tubulars may include drill pipes, risers, production tubing, and tools integrated into such tubulars. Such tubulars may be interconnected using tool joints or threaded tubular sections. Some tool joints may comprise annular shoulders. The shoulders may comprise an annular groove for housing an inductive coupler that may include magnetically conductive electrically insulating (MCEI) trough and an electrically conductive coil laid within the trough. An axial passageway formed in the shoulder may open into the groove. The passageway may comprise flutes. The flutes maybe formed in the wall of the passageway or added to the passageway as an insert or as part of a passageway liner. A fluted transmission line may be disposed within the passageway. The transmission line and liner flutes may mate with the passageway flutes. The liner may be hardened.

    Abstract: A well system incorporates electrically conductive mesh providing robust, reliable electrical communication pathways along portions of tubular equipment. An example system comprises a tubular string disposed in a wellbore, such as a multilateral wellbore. The tubular string defines an internal fluid flow path for conveying fluids to or from a surface of a wellsite. The tubular string also includes a plurality of well components with tubular component bodies arranged along the tubular string. An electrical network along the tubular string interconnects the well components. The electrical network comprising a transmission path defined at least in part by a mesh sleeve disposed along the tubular string around the internal fluid flow path.

    Abstract: An apparatus is proposed for applying and removing protective caps (1) to and from the ends of elongate members (6). The protective cap (1) has a hard base portion (5) and a cover portion (2) of flexible, resilient material, extending from the base portion (5) and operative to cover a portion of an outer surface of the elongate member (6). The apparatus comprises: a gripping mechanism (44) operative to grip the hard base portion (5) of the protective cap (1); a drive mechanism, connected to the gripping mechanism (44), operative to move the protective cap (1) to and from the end of the elongate member (6); and a tool operative to perform at least one of the operations of (i) unfurling the cover portion to secure it to the outer surface of the elongate member, (ii) furling the cover portion to detach it from the outer surface of the elongate member.
