Process for the preparation of thiocarbamic acid-O-esters of the general formula ##EQU1## in which R.sub.1 means an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 each stands for an alkyl radical which may be substituted by one of the groups --(O--C.sub.2 H.sub.4).sub.n --OH, --(OC.sub.2 H.sub.4).sub.n --OCH.sub.3 or --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --CH.sub.3, n being 0, 1 or 2 and m being 1 or 2, or stand for a cycloalkyl radical, and one of the radicals R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may be hydrogen which process comprises reacting at a temperature ranging between 20.degree. and 120.degree.C in an aqueous or water-containing medium a xanthogenate of the formula ##EQU2## in which R.sub.1 is defined as above and Me is an alkali metal with a primary or secondary aliphatic amine of the formula ##EQU3## in which R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are defined as above, and elementary sulfur.

Allophanates of the formula: ##EQU1## wherein: THE X's are oxygen or sulfur;R.sub.1 is hydrogen, certain organic radicals, or halogen; andR.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are certain organic radicals,Are useful for the control of flowering and plant sexual reproduction. A preferred use of the compounds of the present invention is to prevent corn inbreeding by applying the allophanate to the plant at or shortly before tassel emergence.Exempliary of such compounds is: ethyl 4-[1-(4-chlorophenylcarbamoylimino)-1-(methoxy-methyl)]allophanate.

The invention relates to a new and advantageous process for the preparation of substituted S-alkyl thiocarbamates having the general formula (I), ##EQU1## wherein R.sup.1 stands for a C.sub.1-4 alkyl group,R.sup.2 stands for a C.sub.1-4 alkyl or cyclohexyl group, orR.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may form together a C.sub.4-6 polymethylene group, andR.sup.3 stands for a C.sub.2-3 alkyl group.In accordance with the invention the substituted O-alkyl thiocarbamates of the general formula (II), ##EQU2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each have the same meanings as defined above, are subjected to isomerization by heating them at a temperature of 130.degree. to 180.degree.C in the presence of dimethyl sulfate or diethyl sulfate to yield the appropriate S-alkyl esters.

High-purity dialkyl thionocarbamates are economically produced by reacting suitable xanthates with alkyl amines in the presence of a dissolved catalyst. Nickel and palladium salts are preferred catalysts. Thionocarbamates produced by the method of the invention are a desirable flotation reagent for certain refractory copper sulfide ores.

Thiocarbamylsulfenamides are readily recovered from solutions of the thiocarbamylsulfenamides by the addition of a dilute aqueous caustic solution, to flash off the solvent separating the thiocarbamylsulfenamide from the resulting water slurry and drying the thiocarbamylsulfenamide.
