The present invention provides a low-density neutral paper offering excellent opacity, opacity after printing and other advantageous printability properties despite high bulk, by containing, as a filler, precipitated calcium carbonate-silica composite having an average particle size of 30 μm or less and produced by neutralizing a mixture of precipitated calcium carbonate and alkaline silicate to pH 7 to 9, wherein the ratio of precipitated calcium carbonate to silica (precipitated calcium carbonate/silica) is 30/70 to 70/30 in solid content by weight and the surface of precipitated calcium carbonate particles is covered with silica. In particular, the present invention provides a low-density printing paper, or an electrophotographic transfer paper offering excellent stiffness and copier suitability, by means of adjusting the filler content in paper to a range of 1 to 25 solid content percent by weight, or provides a neutral newsprinting paper by means of adjusting the filler content in paper to a range of 0.1 to 25 solid content percent by weight.

A method for forming a silica coating on at least a portion of the surface of alkaline earth metal carbonate particulates in aqueous suspension and the silica-coated alkaline earth metal carbonate so produced are claimed. The claimed method consists of allowing soluble silicate ions in the aqueous phase to slowly react with the alkaline earth metal carbonate surface to form silica micro-particulates on the surface. This silica coating confers upon the composition unique properties among which are pronounced thixotropic behavior when incorporated into an aqueous suspension and increased oil absorption when dry. The pigment produced by this method is especially suited for use as a filler in paper.

This acid-resistant calcium carbonate composition comprises calcium carbonate and at least about 0.1% to about 25% based on the dry weight of the calcium carbonate, of sodium silicate, together with at least 0.1% to about 25 percent, based on the dry weight of the calcium carbonate, of a weak acid, such as phosphoric acid, formic acid, fluoroboric acid, polyacrylic acid, or alum, or a mixture of weak acids, such as phosphoric acid and polyacrylic acid.
