The pair of bending rolls which are below the tangent line have work-engaging faces offset horizontally from the work-engaging faces of the rolls above in the direction toward which the casting is bent, but the offset is insufficient to interfere with vertical movement of the starter bar between these rolls. Several rolls of the curved roll rack below the bending rolls are journaled in a switch section which can open to let the starter bar pass vertically or close to guide a casting.

    摘要: A tundish receiving molten metal and a cooled, closed-end mold are moved relatively apart so that the mold forms a solidified shell of a casting such as a billet, for example, molten metal flowing through the solidified shell to the mold. At least a portion of the closed end or plug of the mold is heated at least during a preheating period to limit or eliminate the formation of a solidifying metal membrane on at least a portion of the closed end. A lubricant and/or a seal may be introduced between an axial wall structure of the mold and the mold plug, and at least a portion of the mold is oscillated relatively to the shell in the mold during casting. The plug in one position thereof may occupy a forward or starting position in the end portion of axial wall structure nearest the tundish. In addition to preheating the tundish before receiving molten metal for flow therethrough, at least a portion of the plug is heated in its forward position during the preheating operation. The axial wall structure may be heated in the preheating operation to remove any condensation from the interior thereof. Thereafter, the near end face of the axial wall structure is abutted against a flange of the tundish prior to the flow of metal through the tundish to the mold. This retraction of the plug produces, with the axial wall structure coacting with the plug, a mold having a variable effective mold cavity.

    摘要: This dummy bar is adapted to be connected in axial end-to-end relation to a continuous casting and to be separated therefrom by moving the dummy bar and casting relatively in opposite directions approximately at right angles to an axial line through the connection from the dummy bar to the casting. The end face of the dummy bar which is to be adjacent to the casting is slanted at an acute angle to the directions in which the adjacent ends are separated so as to slant outward toward a casting connected thereto, in the relative direction in which the dummy bar separates from the casting. An insert is slidable in a first slot across the face of the dummy bar in the relative direction in which the dummy bar moves for the separation, and is normally held therein by a shear pin arranged substantially at right angles to the directions of separation and is adapted to shear at a pressure exceeding a predetermined pressure applied for separating the dummy bar and casting. The connection is made by a connecting member having one end adapted to be embedded in the casting and another end slidably received in a second slot which is across the insert in the relative direction in which pressure applies to the dummy bar for the separation.
