摘要:
A saboted projectile having an elongated sub-projectile having a double-r sabot mounted thereon. The sabot includes a main body portion having a radially extending forward scoop and a central bulkhead between which a toroidal-shaped cavity is formed. A self-sealing container extending between the scoop and the bulkhead encloses the cavity in which a solid propellant is contained. A through-hole, formed in the bulkhead, extends from the cavity to the rear surface of the bulkhead. The through-hole has an opening at the rear of the bulkhead for housing a blow-out plug. An igniter is mounted in the plug for igniting the solid propellant contained in the cavity after a predetermined delay. Ignition may also be achieved via pores or openings in the container which may contain a deterred propellant.

An aeromechanically stable sabot system that includes a center of gravity that is placed forward of an aerodynamic center of the aeromechanically stable sabot system when in steady-state flight. By placing the center of gravity forwards of the aerodynamic center, the sabot system exhibits positive longitudinal and directional stability. To illustrate, the sabot system and/or portions thereof will return to stable flight after being disturbed in pitch (vertically or about a transverse horizontal axis) or yaw (side to side or about a vertical axis) when traveling horizontally.

A shell with a subcaliber penetrator, which has a conical tailpiece, and with a basically disk-shaped propulsion element, wherein the conical tailpiece has a frustum-shaped recess that is open towards the rear end. The propulsion element is joined with the penetrator, preferably by a screw connection (projectile fastening bolt. To this end, a bolt element joins the propulsion element and the penetrator in the area of the tailpiece and has a borehole that is open at the rear end, into which propellant charge gases flow when the shell is fired and cause rending of the bolt element and thus separation of the propulsion element from the penetrator.

A cartridge assembly for propelling a subcaliber penetrator through a gun tube which has a portion of the propellant charge contained in an annular cavity surrounding the sabot is disclosed. The annular cavity is defined by the scoop shaped front bourrelet, the aft bourrelet which has three radially extending support posts and bore riding shoes, and a combustible tubular case extension over the aft bourrelet extending forward to the front bourrelet. The assembly includes cartridge case having a multistrand ignition system having a plurality of flexible combustible ignition strand. The strands extend through the propellant charge in the case and extend between the posts of the aft bourrelet into the annular cavity to simultaneously ignite the propellant charge contained therein with the portion of the charge in the cartridge case.

A reusable "training" or "practice" round has a reusable hollow casing and a reusable hollow projectile that "snap together" and are releasably retained in assembled relationship by utilizing a resilient connecting member such as a groove-carried O-ring that is interposed between juxtaposed surfaces of concentrically interfitting portions of the casing and the projectile. The assembled practice round is inserted into the chamber end region of the barrel of a firearm and, when the round is fired, the casing is retained in the chamber as the projectile is caused to move along the barrel of the firearm and to discharge along a trajectory that closely simulates the path of flight of a "live" round. Propellant is provided by a reloadable or disposable blank-type cartridge. The projectile and the casing have hollow interiors that communicate and cooperate to define a closed chamber into which the blank round is fired to explosively generate the force needed to rapidly disconnect the projectile from the casing and to launch the projectile through the barrel of the firearm. A snap-together type of releasable connection is established between the casing and the projectile 1) by providing the casing and the projectile with coaxially extending surfaces that are brought into juxtaposed relationship during assembly of the casing and the projectile, and 2) by positioning a resilient connecting member to be tightly clamped between the juxtaposed surfaces just as assembly of the round is completed.

A back-actuated forward ignition cartridge having a case, a puller sabot and rod penetrator projectile in the forward mouth end of the case, and a combination compacted propellant solid mass and loose propellant charge ignitable by back ignition through actuation of a rear primer and guided flame propagation through a guide tube extending through the compacted propellant mass and to the vicinity of the loose propellant charge, while preventing ignition of the compacted propellant mass as the flame passes along the tube therethrough. The guide tube has a booster ignition charge therein to assist in forward flame propagation and ignition of the loose propellant. Burning of the loose propellant charge effects pressurized constriction of the sabot about the projectile and drives the sabot/projectile from the case and along a barrel bore, thereby increasing the effective burning volume prior to ignition of the compacted propellant solid mass. The burning of the loose propellant also effects ignition of the compacted propellant solid mass, the burning of which impacts a large further thrust to the projectile of greater amount than would be effected by employment of a solely loose propellant charge of material comparable to the employed propellant or propellants.
