A method of starting an electric brushless rotating machine is provided where a large startup torque is obtained with no use of any rotor position detecting device and the forced commutation can be switched to normal energization easily and smoothly. At the startup stage, any two of three-phase stator windings are energized for initial magnetization (Steps S1 and S2) to hold the magnetic rotor at a position. Then, the windings of the phases are energized in a sequence while gradually increasing the level of the energization (Step S3). During the forced commutation, the magnetic rotor is rotated by a rotating position detecting signal generated from a voltage signal induced on the not-energized windings to drive the output shaft of an engine. Then, the energization is canceled when the number of revolutions in the internal combustion engine determined from the rotating position detecting signal reaches its predetermined level.

A voltage regulator for an a.c. generator produces a power generation ratio signal having a duty ratio corresponding to the current supply to the field winding of the a.c. generator. This power generation ratio signal is applied to an external apparatus through a signal wire. The duty ratio of the power generation ratio signal is more than 10% when the a.c. generator is normal. When abnormality is detected, the power generation ratio signal is partly masked by an abnormality detection signal so that the duty ratio of the power generation signal is reduced to be less than 10% and this change may be detected by the external apparatus. Alternatively, the power generation ratio signal may be transmitted only intermittently when the abnormality is detected.

A control unit of a vehicle generator is provided which is capable of instantaneously stopping power generation in a safe manner with an inexpensive system configuration without the need of interrupting a large current when a key switch is turned off. The control unit includes a vehicle generator (2), a battery (5) adapted to be charged by an output of the vehicle generator, and a control circuit (2) having an on-off control switching transistor (1j) for controlling the turning on and off of a field current of the vehicle generator. The control circuit is operable to interrupt the on-off control switching transistor (1j) when a detected voltage of the battery (5) is higher than a reference voltage, and make the on-off control switching transistor (1j) conductive thereby to control the voltage of power generation at a predetermined voltage when the detected voltage of the battery (5) is below the reference voltage. A power generation stop circuit (6) is provided which has an off detection circuit (6a) for detecting turning off of a key switch (4) of a vehicle. The power generation stop circuit (6) is operable to stop the power generation of the vehicle generator (2) when the off detection circuit (6a) detects the turning off of the vehicle key switch (4). A power generation stop terminal (K) is connected with a control terminal of the on-off control switching transistor (1j). The power generation stop circuit (6) controls the power generation stop terminal (K) to stop the power generation of the vehicle generator (2) instantaneously when the off detection circuit (6a) detects the turning off of the vehicle key switch (4).

The method for stabilizing the voltage of an AC generator with varying (alternating) rotor speed is characterized in that the voltage generated by an AC generator is maintained constant when the rotor speed changes. The control is carried out without the use of electrical contacts by means of a high-frequency pulse generator. The transformer of the high-frequency pulse generator is divided. The rotating part is provided on the rotor axis and the other part is stationary outside the rotor. Both parts are separated by an air gap. Deviations from a preset output voltage are controlling the pulse generator whose pulses are transmitted by the transformer to the power section of the rotor. The complete power section consisting of the coil and the electronic switch is arranged on the rotor so as to transmit only control currents without physical contact.

In a power generator, a start of rotor rotation is detected by utilizing a small AC voltage in a stator winding generated by a remaining magnetic flux. A leak current which flows to the power generator from a battery is passed to a negative terminal of the battery through a resistor temporarily connected in series so that a small amplitude of the AC voltage will not be masked by DC drifting component arising from the leak current. Further, periodically connecting the resistor to the negative terminal upon an increase in the leak current reduces an amplitude of the AC voltage.
