    摘要: An apparatus and method for transporting data cartridges between cartridge libraries. A data cartridge is received by a data cartridge transport device, pivoted, and then ejected to a cartridge sleeve of a second cartridge library. In one embodiment, the data cartridge transport device includes a pivot assembly; a cartridge sleeve, mounted to the pivot assembly; a cartridge eject mechanism, operably associated with the cartridge sleeve; a drive assembly; and a clutch assembly. The clutch assembly moves between first and second positions, wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the first position engages the pivot assembly with the drive assembly, thereby enabling pivoting of the cartridge sleeve, and wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the second position engages the cartridge eject mechanism with the drive assembly, thereby enabling ejection of a data cartridge from the cartridge sleeve.

    摘要: An automatic tape cartridge loader includes a moveable shuttle, for receiving the tape cartridge, and elements for automatically actuating the shuttle during loading and unloading operations. The shuttle includes a door-opening feature, preferably formed as an integral element of one wall of the shuttle. The door-opening feature engages a sliding tape access door on one side of a tape cartridge, as the cartridge is inserted into the shuttle. The preferred embodiment of the shuttle also includes one or more extruded features formed on an opposite wall of the shuttle to justify the cartridge within the shuttle and thereby ensure engagement of the door-opening feature with the access door during cartridge insertion. These features are passive elements, in that they require no mechanical or electrical actuation or any parts that are moveable relative to the shuttle. Instead, these elements rely entirely on the movement of the cartridge into the shuttle to open the access door. The use of integral features to properly position the cartridge and open the door provides a particularly simple mechanism occupying minimal space within the volume allotted for the automatic cartridge loader mechanism. Also, these simple elements are quite durable and resistant to damage.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to a data cartridge library system that realizes a reduced cost by reducing the number of certain components, especially expensive components, that are needed to perform certain functions within the library. With respect to certain functions, a reduced cost is realized by using lower precision compenentry in combination with componentry that compensates for lower precision while still providing a reduced component cost with respect to a given function. In one embodiment of the invention, a data cartridge picker is provided that: (1) uses a single electro-mechanical device for the functions of grasping a data cartridge, retracting a grasped cartridge from a drive/storage location, inserting a grasped cartridge into a drive/storage location, and releasing a grasped cartridge once position in a desired location; (2) is capable of compensating for variations in cartridge positioning; (3) has a gripping mechanism that. moves in a sinusiodal manner; and (4) avoids the wear and tear associated with moving fully retracted gripper mechanism that is not holding a data cartridge from a fully retracted position to a position at which a cartridge can be retrieved. Another embodiment provides a elevator mechanism for moving the cartridge picker in which the guiding portion of the mechanism is also part of the portion of the mechanism that moves the cartridge picker.

The variable coiled configuration facilitates the ribbon cable having a first degree of coiling when the picker robot rotates to a first position and a second degree of coiling when the picker robot rotates to a second position.

    摘要: A picker mechanism for automatically taking a cartridge storing a recording medium into and out of a preselected position of a recording medium library includes a pair of fingers openable away from each other for gripping the cartridge therebetween. Basing members constantly bias the fingers toward a closed position. An opening member forces the fingers open against the action of the biasing members when moved forward to an advanced position. A solenoid for causes the opening member to move between a retracted position and the advanced position. The picker mechanism causes the fingers to open and close instantaneously and increases the gripping force of the fingers. In addition, the picker mechanism is simple and low cost.

    摘要: An automated video cassette library apparatus is provided which is actuated in response to command signals originated by an individual at a location remote from such apparatus to transfer a select video cassette in a horizontal plane from a cassette shelf to a cassette player each of which is located in a compact housing. The apparatus is then ready for use by another individual who may select another video cassette for playing upon another video player each of which is located in the same housing. The cassette player plays the video cassette and communicates the recorded program to the individual's television set. Upon completion of each play, the video cassette is rewound and automatically transferred from the cassette player to the cassette shelf.
