Systems and methods associated with configurable advanced process control (APC) application development are described. One embodiment includes a computing system that includes configuration files corresponding to APC clients. The computing system also includes computational models corresponding to the configuration files. The computing system also includes a Rapid Advanced Control Enabler (RACE). A RACE may select a configuration file to process based, at least in part, on a request received from an APC client. A RACE may also dynamically load a computational model that corresponds to the selected configuration file. A RACE may also execute the dynamically loaded computational model and provide a response to the APC client from which the request was received.

The disclosed method includes initially specifying a device type commissioning definition that includes a set of device-type specific parameters. A first set of instance-specific configuration parameter values are then stored for a first field device. When replacing the first field device by a second field device of the same type on a process control network, the commissioning definition and the previously stored parameters for the first device are used to automatically configure the second device.

The integration of a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a motion control (NC) into a universal motion control (UMC) is realized by a tailored and nonetheless essentially user-configurable run-level model for processing of software tasks. This run-level model consists of types of different user levels and system levels with different priorities. In particular, one of the run levels (FA) can be configured very effectively according to user requirements. Thus, this kind of universal motion control (UMC) can be optimized by software to the particular requirements of the control task and the technical process.
