Abstract:
The invention entails apparatus for mounting a payload, such as a warhead, to bulkheads carried by munitions. The apparatus comprises fore and aft bulkheads depending from the munitions, each of the bulkheads having a substantially centrally located opening; bulkhead attaching structure carried by the payload and engaging at least one of the bulkheads, and at least one fastener carried by the bulkhead attaching structure and engaging both the payload and the bulkhead attaching structure. In one embodiment, the bulkhead attaching structure is an annular ring element disposed about and secured to the aft end of said payload. The ring element includes a first annular portion of a first diameter, and a second aft portion of a second diameter, the first diameter of said first portion being smaller than the second diameter to accommodate annular portions of the aft bulkhead. In a second embodiment, the bulkhead attaching structure comprises a step element carried by the payload, which abuts the fore bulkhead. The step element may be integral with the payload or a separate discrete element. In a third embodiment, the bulkhead attaching structure comprises a vertical buttress carried by the aft bulkhead and a tension element for fastening the vertical buttress to the aft end of the payload.

The individual projectiles are aligned when the explosive charge deploys the projectiles. The projectiles may also be aimed in a specific direction.

Device for filling a shell body with a plurality of sub-projectiles including a U-shaped assembly centering device coupled with a cover. A reservoir, formed between the assembly centering device and the cover, includes a slit-like shaped rectangle in cross-section. A flange is fastened in a lower area of the reservoir on the assembly centering device, and a slider for moving with respect to the reservoir includes a width corresponding to a length of the slit-like rectangle. A top portion includes a V-shaped notch extending along a longitudinal direction, and a bottom portion includes a V-shape extending along the longitudinal direction. A perforation, extending coaxially with the slider and provided in the assembly centering device, includes a first part approximately corresponding to an outline of the slider and a second part approximately corresponding to an outer periphery of a layer. A shoulder at an outlet of the perforation is provided for guiding the plurality of sub-projectiles into the shell body element, and a holding ring is fastened on the assembly centering device extending coaxially with the shoulder.

The present invention relates to a method and device for combating identified targets (F) using warheads (2) from a launching vehicle (1) flying over a target area, by separating from this launching vehicle (1) warheads (2) which act independently after separation, and including those targets which lie close to the flight trajectory of the launching vehicle (1) and those which lie well to the side of same flight trajectory. The invention is based on the use of that part of the kinetic energy of the launching vehicle (1) which the warhead (2) takes over from the same when it is separated in order to give the warhead (2) a looping trajectory or any other programmed flight trajectory, which carries it up to a starting height adapted to its active use, which lies considerably above the actual flight trajectory of the launching vehicle (1), and which, if so required, can carry the warhead (2) back to the geographical position where it was separated from the launching vehicle (1). The action of the warhead (2) can then follow guidelines known per se.

A multiple module EFP warhead comprises a tubular body having a central axis with a plurality of explosively formed penetrator modules arranged tandemly within the body along the axis. Each of the modules includes a curved, dish shaped support disk having a unique forwardly convex curvature. The support disk is focused on the axis at a point behind the module. Each module has a set of circumferentially spaced apertures therethrough, each having a central aperture axis intersecting the central axis. Each aperture supports a separate ductile metal disk therein and an explosive charge behind and against the metal disk. Each of the aperture axes forms an acute angle of inclination with the central axis which is uniquely offset from the axes of the other modules so that each EFP travels along a unique forward path.

A sequential launching system is disclosed for sonobuoys and the like in which each of a plurality of sonobuoys is provided with a separate launch mechanism. The launch mechanism comprises a piston and piston chamber at the aft end of the sonobuoy. The cross-sectional area of the piston chamber is substantially smaller than that of the launch tube and air flow passages are provided for allowing ambient air to flow to the aft end of the sonobuoy to equalize the air pressure with that at the forward end. Air passages around the plural sonobuoys are provided by longitudinally extending, radially spaced ribs which extend from the muzzle end to the breech end of the launch tube. The ribs serve to support and guide the sonobuoys in the launch tube.

A carrier shell for secondary projectiles having a shell casing, a plurality of secondary projectiles within the casing, an explosive dispersal charge for dispersing the projectiles and a safety device having a body closing a venting aperature in the casing. A first mechanical connection secures the body to the casing and yields on detonation of the charge before firing to vent any explosion before firing without dispersing the projectiles. A second mechanical connection is moved in response to firing to a condition preventing venting.

Clustered ammunition which is ejectable from canisters for the combating of ground targets, which includes a central body which is encompassed by the ammunition with a member for clustering the ammunition. The clustered ammunition is retained by a clamping band and is fixed in position through the intermediary of formed-fitted components.
