A multicolor ink ribbon switching system for a printer includes at least one discrimination switch, a controller, a cassette swinging mechanism, and a ribbon feed mechanism. The discrimination switch discriminates whether a ribbon cassette mounted on a base is a multicolor or monochromatic ink ribbon cassette. The controller receives an output from the discrimation switch. If the output represents the multicolor ribbon cassette, the controller outputs a swinging signal in the color switching mode and a ribbon feed signal in the printing mode. However, if the output represents a monochromatic ribbon cassette, the controller outputs a ribbon feed signal. The cassette swinging mechanism causes the ribbon cassette to swing in response to the cassette swinging signal to switch ribbon colors. The ribbon feed mechanism winds the ribbon in response to the ribbon feed signal from the controller.

A thermal ink transfer printing apparatus comprising a carriage moved along the rotating shaft of a platen roller, and a thermal head provided with a row of heating elements. A fixture which is urged backward by a spring is rotatably attached to the carriage and to the front side of which is attached the thermal head. A solenoid is fixed on the carriage with its core rod contacted with the backside of the fixture. An ink ribbon fed from an ink ribbon feeding reel and wound around an ink ribbon winding reel after passing through the thermal head. The ink ribbon feeding and winding reels are arranged on the carriage. When current is applied to the solenoid, the thermal head is pressed against the platen roller to closely contact the ink ribbon with a recording sheet on the circumference of the platen roller, while when current supply is stopped to the solenoid, the thermal head is retreated to peel off the ink ribbon from the recording sheet. When blanks corresponding to two serial characters are applied to the thermal head, both of current supply to the solenoid and the winding of the ink ribbon are stopped, to thereby avoid the winding of the ink ribbon unused.

In order to maintain constant tension on a relatively long expanse of ribbon stretched along the carrier path in impact printer apparatus having off-the-carrier ribbon drive and feed, apparatus is provided for driving a first and a second reel in forward and reverse directions, each reel being adapted to support a portion of an inventory of a ribbon web running along said carrier path from one of said reels to the other at a constant speed differential between the portion of the web being taken up on one of the reels and the portion of the web being supplied on the other of said reels irrespective of the drive direction which comprises a first inelastic drive belt for peripherally non-slip driving the web portion on the first reel and a second inelastic drive belt for peripherally non-slip driving the web portion on the second reel. A first drive means provided for selectively engaging and driving the first and second belts in the forward direction wherein the first reel takes up the ribbon; in this case, the second drive belt is driven at a speed slower than the first drive belt wherein the ribbon between the reels is maintained under a constant strain. Second drive means to provide for selectively engaging and driving the first and second belts in the reverse direction wherein the second reel takes up the web; the first drive belt in this case is driven at a speed slower than the second belt whereby the ribbon between the reels is also maintained under a constant strain.

Unidirectional driving torque is applied to the inputs of first and second differential gears. Each differential gear includes an output blocking gear as well as a spool output gear coupled to a spool with a ribbon web transported between the spools. A locking gear alternately engages the blocking gears and is held in position by a detent mechanism which yieldably restrains rotation of the locking gear. Each of the spool output gears are provided with unidirectional brakes. The restrained blocking gear selects the differential gear through which the input drive is transferred to its respective spool. A web tension condition causes the restrained blocking gear to rotate the locking gear against the detent and the locking gear increments to its alternate position with the previous supply spool becoming the take-up spool.

Apparatus for advancing the ribbon in printing machines such as office typewriters, teleprinters and the like, such apparatus including a pair of ribbon reels mounted on a type carrier carriage which is movable relative to a paper carriage, and a cable looped around a pair of drive rollers connected respectively to the ribbon reels for joint rotation. One end of the cable is held fast in relation to the paper carriage while the other end is connected to a selectively movable armature of an electro-magnet for alternately tensioning and relaxing the cable, whereby the ribbon reels are rotated by the cable as the type carrier carriage moves in an operative or printing direction relative to the paper carriage, but are not rotated as the type carrier carriage moves back in an operative direction to begin another printing cycle. A pair of cables and armatures may be used to effect reverse winding of the ribbon on the reels, and a single, double-acting armature may serve to tension and relax both cables.

A ribbon feed device for a ribbon in a cartridge, comprises means for supporting the cartridge with spools therein engaged on hubs of the device, guide means for guiding a length of ribbon looped out of the cartridge, and a single control member operable from a normal position to an operated position to shift the guide means transversely of the length of the ribbon to a position of greater accessibility for fitting the ribbon therein. The ribbon feed device is capable of accepting either an inked ribbon cartridge or a carbon coated cartridge and includes a pair of sensing levers urged by a spring adapted to sense the inked ribbon wound on the two spools respectively through apertures in the inked ribbon cartridge and to control means for effecting reversal of the movement of the inked ribbon. Moreover, the feed mechanism includes a feed roller and counter-roller for unidirectionally feeding the carbon coated ribbon. The control member withdraws the sensing levers from contact with the ribbon and the counter-roller from the feed roller. The inked ribbon cartridge includes a first aperture enabling the sensing levers to contact the inked ribbon wound on the two spools and a second aperture in which the feed roller and the counter-roller are freely rotatable, externally to the path of the inked ribbon in the cartridge. The carbon coated ribbon cartridge includes an aperture which engages the sensing levers and sets the mechanism to wind in the corresponding spool the ribbon fed thereto from the feed roller and counter-roller.
