A display apparatus includes a speaker, a storage configured to store first rendering type information and second rendering type information based on a volume level of each content genre; a display, and a processor configured to render a sound signal of a content based on at least one of the first rendering type information and the second rendering type information corresponding to a genre of the content on the display and output the rendered sound signal through the speaker, wherein the processor, based on a volume level which is currently set in the display apparatus being within a predetermined range, renders the sound signal based on third rendering type information which is obtained by applying a weight according to the set volume level to at least one of the first rendering type information and the second rendering type information.

To address the above technical problem, a method of processing an audio signal includes: receiving an audio bitstream that is encoded by using MPEG Surround 212 (MPS212); generating an internal channel signal with respect to one channel pair element (CPE) based on the received audio bitstream and rendering parameters with respect to MPS212 output channels defined in a format converter; allocating a group of internal channels based on an output channel location of a core codec; and generating stereo channel output signals based on the generated internal channel signal and the allocated group of the internal channels.

When a multi-channel signal, such as from a 22.2 channel, is rendered to a 5.1 channel, three-dimensional audio signals can be reproduced by means of a two-dimensional output channel. However, when the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation and an elevation rendering parameter corresponding to the standard elevation is used, audio image distortion occurs. The present invention resolves the described issue in the existing technology, and a method of rendering audio signals, according to an embodiment of the present invention, which reduces the audio image distortion even when the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation, comprises the steps of: receiving a multi-channel signal comprising a plurality of input channels to be converted into a plurality of output channels; obtaining elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a standard elevation angle so that each output channel provides an audio image having a sense of elevation; and updating the elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a set elevation angle other than the standard elevation angle.
