Abstract: A detection area 112 is set in a three-dimensional space in which a subject exists. When an actual hand enters the detection area 112, coordinate points (white and black dots) represented by pixels making up a silhouette 114 of the hand in a depth image enter the detection area 112. In the detection area 112, a reference vector 126 is set that shows the direction which the hand should face relative to the shoulder as a reference point 122. Then, an inner product between two vectors, a vector from the reference point 122 to each of coordinate points and the reference vector 126, is calculated, followed by comparison between the inner products. Positions of coordinate points whose inner products are ranked high are acquired as the position of tips of the hand.

Abstract: An operation object includes a polyhedron. The polyhedron includes characteristic surfaces formed by cutting each vertex of a cube at different angles. An information processing apparatus acquires a normal vector of each surface from a polarized image thereof. Further, the information processing apparatus identifies the characteristic surface by defining, as a characteristic amount, an angle formed by an average vector Na of normal vectors N1, N2, and N3 of reference surfaces that orthogonally intersect each other and a normal vector N0 of the characteristic surface surrounded by the reference surfaces. The specification result and the normal vectors thereof are used to acquire the position and orientation of the operation object.

Abstract: A first estimating unit estimates at least one of a position and an attitude of a predetermined object on the basis of an image of a periphery of the object, the image being obtained from an imaging device, and generates an estimation result not including an accumulated error.
