    摘要: Optical systems for sensing radiation emissions from radiological and nuclear matter. An example system includes a light source, a light sensor, a processing device in signal communication with the light source and the light sensor, and a fiber optic cable that receives light from the light source and delivers light to the light sensor. The fiber optic cable includes an optical fiber core region surrounded by a cladding region. The optical fiber is a single mode optical fiber having a mode field diameter greater than 25 μm. The optical fiber cladding region includes a plurality of lengthwise holes positioned to provide single mode light propagation properties. The plurality of lengthwise holes have a diameter between 0.1-5 μm.

    摘要: Multiple resonator fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) configurations comprising one or more mode filters inside the resonator are adopted to effectively suppress unwanted high order spatial modes which can be a significant source of gyro bias errors. The resonator comprises at least a loop fiber, either two or more in/out coupling elements, and connectors that link elements into a circulating loop. Directional elements may be used to separate output light from input light in some of the embodiments. In all embodiments, mode filters are placed in the resonator to guarantee that the light reaching the photodetector is filtered by at least one mode filter in the resonator at least once. The mode filters may contain both spatial mode filters (such as single mode fibers or waveguides) and polarization mode filters (such as polarizing elements) so that both spatial and polarization mode filtering can be implemented simultaneously.

In one embodiment, an optical circuit for a fiber optic gyroscope having a broadband light source and an optical fiber loop comprises: a PM fiber of length v; an IOC coupled to the PM fiber via a pigtail of length d1, a second pigtail with length of d2, and a third pigtail with length of d3; a splitter that splits light received from the first pigtail into a first and second beams directed to the second and third pigtails; and a depolarizer circuit coupled to said fiber loop including a first fiber section of length x, a second fiber section of length z, a third fiber section of length w and a fourth fiber section of length y; and wherein the lengths of v, x, y, d1 and d3 are proportioned to avoid regions of high bias instability.

    摘要: A resonator sensing device having an optics coupler device for communicating light between light source(s) and sensor(s) and a hollow core fiber resonator. Light from one resonator fiber tip is coupled to a second resonator fiber tip via a graded index (GRIN) lens having the appropriate pitch such that the maximum coupling efficiency is achieved and having two angled surfaces. The angled surfaces are coated with an appropriate coating having a reflectance R in order to achieve the desired degree of coupling. Light reflected by the second angled surface is captured with another lens (such as a microlens) and coupled to a third fiber segment (coupled port). The optical parameters for the GRIN lens and the microlens are tailored to have the least loss.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for determining the rotational rate of an optical gyro. An optical gyro comprises at least one substrate, a multi-frequency light source (MFLS) mounted on the substrate, and a resonator coupled to the MFLS. The MFLS is configured to produce a first light beam having a first frequency and a second light beam having a second frequency and phase locked with the first light beam. The resonator comprises an optical fiber coil having a hollow core. The resonator is configured to circulate a portion of each of the first and second light beams through the hollow core. The portion of the first light beam propagates in a first counter-propagating direction, and the portion of the second light beam propagates in a second counter-propagating direction. A measured difference between the first and second frequencies indicates a frequency shift proportional to the rotation rate of the optical gyro.

    摘要: Apparatus is provided for a fiber optic gyro. The fiber optic gyro includes a ring resonator having first and second counter-propagating directions. The ring resonator includes a coil having an axis and an optical fiber having a hollow core. The ring resonator is configured to produce a first resonance frequency when a first light beam circulates through the hollow core in the first counter-propagating direction and produce a second resonance frequency when a second light beam circulates through the hollow core in the second counter-propagating direction. A difference between the resonance frequencies indicates a rotation rate of the fiber optic gyro about the axis.

    摘要: Systems and methods for measuring a target radiation substance using a fiber-optic sensor. An ample method includes activating the sensor at a first power level, measuring light at a photo sensor, increasing power to a second power level, if the measured light indicates possible presence of the target radiation substance, measuring light at the photo sensor after the increase in power, and outputting an error signal, if the target radiation type was not detected based on the measured light signatures. The first power level is typically between 1-1000 μWatts and the second power level is typically between 100-10000 μWatts. In a further confirmation, the power is decreased to approximately the first power level, if the error signal is not outputted.

The optical fiber coil has a permeable cladding and an indicator embedded in the cladding that reacts to an agent (e.g., a chemical or biological substance). The resonator circulates light through the coil and produces a resonance shape centered at the resonance frequency and measured via the input light. A predetermined change in the resonance shape indicates a presence of the agent in the environment.
