    Abstract: Head-mountable devices can include adjustment mechanisms to achieve optimal alignment of optical components during and/or after assembly thereof within the head-mountable device. The alignment mechanisms can be integrated into the head-mountable device itself. A light projecting display element can be adjustable based on movement of ramp members within the head-mountable device (e.g., within an arm) to adjust an orientation of the light projecting display element relative to the waveguide onto which it projects light. Alignment can be verified based on the optical output of the display element. The adjustment mechanisms can adjust the display element during initial assembly and/or be operated by actuators that actively adjust the alignment as needed over time.

    Abstract: A head-mounted device may have displays that provide images. Waveguides may be used in conveying the images to eye boxes. The waveguides may overlap lenses in a glasses frame or other head-mounted support structure. The waveguides and lenses may be transparent. This allows real-world objects to be viewed from the eye boxes. Infrared-light reflectors may overlap the lenses. Gaze tracking system light sources may supply infrared light that reflects from the infrared-light reflectors to the eye boxes to illuminate a user's eyes. Gaze tracking system cameras capture gaze tracking images of the eyes from the eye boxes to track the user's gaze. Fiducials associated with the infrared-light reflectors may be monitored using the gaze tracking system cameras. This allows components such as the gaze tracking system cameras to be calibrated.

    Abstract: A head-mounted device may have a transparent display. The transparent display may be formed from a display unit that provides images to a user through an optical coupler. A user may view real-world objects through the optical coupler while control circuitry directs the transparent display to display computer-generated content over selected portions of the real-world objects. The head-mounted display may also include an adjustable opacity system. The adjustable opacity system may include an adjustable opacity layer such as a photochromic layer that overlaps the optical coupler and a light source that selectively exposes the adjustable opacity layer to ultraviolet light to control the opacity of the adjustable opacity layer. The adjustable opacity layer may block or dim light from the real-world objects to allow improved contrast when displaying computer-generated content over the real-world objects.

A portion of the head-mounted support structure may form a transparent housing member through which real-world objects can be viewed from eye boxes. A display system for the head-mounted device may have a display device that provides image light to a waveguide and may have an output coupler that couples the image light out of the waveguide toward the eye box. Peripheral portions of the transparent housing member or other peripheral device structures may be provided with a peripheral display that emits diffuse light into a user's peripheral vision. The peripheral display may use light guide structures, light sources, reflective structures, and other structures that provide transparency to real-world light.

The head-mounted display unit provides content to a user and is operable in a low-power state and a high-power state that consumes more power to provide the content to the user than the low-power state. The wake control system determines when to operate in the high-power state. The wake control system may assess a first wake criterion with low power, assess a second wake criterion with higher power than the first wake criterion upon satisfaction of the first wake criterion, and cause the head-mounted display unit to operate in the high-power state upon satisfaction of the second wake criterion.

    Abstract: A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted support structure. The head-mounted support may support optical systems. The optical systems may be display systems that provide images to eye boxes. A user may view images from the display systems when the user's eyes are located in the eye boxes. The head-mounted support structure is bent due to pressure from a user's head while the head-mounted support structure is being worn by the user. Spring hinges or other structures may be used to supply a constant bending force to the head-mounted support structure over a range of head sizes. When the head-mounted support structure is in an unbent configuration, the images will be misaligned with respect to the eye boxes and each other. When the head-mounted support structure is being worn and the head-mounted support structure is being bent, the images will be aligned satisfactorily.
