The first assembly (10, 25) and the second assembly (2) are rotatable relative to each other about the axis. A vehicle transmission system is described which employs a split power path design to achieve continuously variable speed ratios. A motor-generator unit is provided for converting a fraction of the input power into electrical power, and a second motor-generator and differential gear mechanism are employed to re-combine the two power components before transmitting the mechanical power through a gearbox. Electrical power dissipation means allows the transmission system to provide slippage when accelerating a load from rest, and it also assists in shifting and in braking. An electronic motor controller coordinates feedback signals from various sensors and controls the dynamic performance of the entire system. The motor-generators are integrated with the housing of the transmission and have water jackets to assist in heat dissipation. The motor-generator pair and the power dissipation elements are all cooled by a circulating fluid which transfers heat from these components to an external heat exchanger.

The motor housing comprises a cup-shaped ferromagnetic part having an open end and an axial end plate of ferromagnetic material closing off the open end to form a motor housing of rectangular cross-section when viewed in longitudinal section. A generally disk-shaped rpm-signal generating structure is mounted interiorly of the motor housing, coaxial with the rotor axis, at one axial end of the housing, and just inward of a wall of the motor housing which forms part of the flux-conducting magnet system of the motor, whereby such wall shields the rpm-signal generating structure at least against electromagnetic interference originating exteriorly of the motor housing. The motor comprises slip rings or commutator segments on whose surfaces stationary brushes ride. The brushes are provided with longitudinal recesses, projections or internal bores, so that the brush configuration itself makes for longitudinal brush guidance, and the brushes are mounted on brush guide members which engage such longitudinal portions of the brush. The rotor shaft and the motor housing are conductively connected by means of a contact element engaging the rotor shaft at one axial end, to prevent build-up of electrostatic fields as between the rotor shaft and the motor housing.

The invention relates to a low current, low voltage generator for use in an underwater lighting system. The generator is driven by a commercially available source of power, for example, house current. The generator consists of an AC motor having an output shaft and a magnet mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith. A coil arrangement is disposed in a plane parallel with but spaced from the plane of the magnet. The magnet is cylindrical in shape and includes a slot in the front face which faces the coil arrangement. Thus, when the magnet is rotated, it produces an EMF in the coil arrangement to provide a low current low voltage AC output at the output of the coil arrangement, which can be rectified to provide a DC output if required.

A combined motor and tachometer in a single housing incorporates an axial commutator for the motor and a radial commutator for the tachometer, in back-to-back relation, providing a maximum length reluctance path between the field for the motor and the field for the tachometer, and also between the armature of the motor and the armature of the tachometer. In this manner, the relatively sensitive tachometer is effectively isolated from adverse affects of the relatively heavier motor field.
