A multiple voltage electrical supply system continuously connected for individually charging a plurality of battery supplies continuously connected in series with one another to supply a plurality of load circuits having differing d.c. input voltage requirements and, typically, also having differing expected electrical power consumption rates. The system includes an alternator having electrically isolated generating windings disposed so as to insure that the magnetic flux linking each of the generating windings bears a substantially constant ratio to that linking the other of the generating windings. The exemplary embodiment has generating windings of different characteristic resistance per unit length such that there is an increased internal voltage drop in the winding intended to supply the lighter electrical load. The resultant voltage regulation characteristics are such that a single voltage regulator is sufficient to maintain both of the output voltages at a substantially constant predetermined ratio.

A composite machine supplies speed and control signals to a speed controllable converter machine assembly equipped with thyristors. The composite machine includes a slotted stator subdivided into at least two sections along its circumference. An inductive pulse generator is provided having primary and secondary windings arranged in one of the sections and a tachometer generator is provided with excitation and alternatingcurrent windings arranged in the other one of the sections. A damper winding is arranged intermediate the two sections to electrically separate the same. A toothed rotor is mounted to rotate in the stator to coact with the windings of the pulse generator and with the windings of the tachometer generator.

A multiple output alternator having separate sets of power coils mounted on the stator adapted to be magnetically excited by a rotor having a direct current field coil is provided for a vehicle. The separate power coils being in a cooperative relation to give a distributed load condition when the rotor is driven by the variable speed power unit of the vehicle. Rectifying and voltage regulating means are provided for both sets of power coils to provide a high and low wattage power source, with the field coil of the rotor being supplied with a regulated D.C. voltage from the high wattage power source which also supplies power to the conventional electrical system of the automotive vehicle. For example, two power sources from an alternator are adapted to be used for charging batteries in a power system having two storage batteries which supply power to circuits requiring differing voltages, a relatively low voltage circuit which may include the high wattage power source and one of the batteries and a relatively high voltage circuit which is supplied by both storage batteries in series connection for special purposes such as starting of the variable speed power unit. More than two outputs could be supplied if desired.

[Class 35] The rotor of a generator is disposed between two stator members and produces continuouscurrent at the commutator while alternating- current is generated in the outer stator member. In the form shown, the polar projections 53 on the rotor 14 co-operate with the wound teeth 51 of the outer stator 12 to form an alternator, the stator 12 also having an exciting winding (not shown). The rotor also carries a continuous current producing winding 42 connected to a commutator and co-operating with the inner stator member 13 which has four polepieces with windings 46 excited from the commutator. A fan draws air into the machine by louvres at one end and ejects it at the other end after it has passed through the interpolar spaces of the inner stator.
