A system and method for coupling electrical power subsea. The system comprises a subsea electrical distribution system having at least one modular subsea circuit breaker assembly. The modular circuit breaker comprises a busbar enclosure housing a busbar. In one embodiment, the bus bar enclosure is pressurized with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. At least one circuit breaker enclosure housing a subsea circuit breaker is secured to the busbar enclosure. The interior of the busbar enclosure may be sealed from the interior of the circuit breaker enclosure. The circuit breaker enclosure may be pressurized with SF6 gas.

The electrical connection between the two chambers is established via gas tight passages or passthroughs arranged diagonally in the protective wall, with the passages being disposed, in one direction, at the spacing between the bus bars and, in the other perpendicular direction, at the spacing of the poles of the high voltage power or load switch in the switch chamber. Straight connections without crossovers are provided in the bus bar chamber between each bus bar and the associated passage via the respective disconnect or three-way position bus bar switch, while the connecting lines in the switch chamber from the passages to the respective poles of the high voltage switch extend in mutually parallel planes, here again without cross-overs.

A busway system enables multiple interchangeable power support redundancies to be provided to electrical loads. The busway system includes multiple busways extending through an aisle space, where some busways carry power from separate primary power sources, and one or more busways carry power from a secondary power source. Busways are coupled to loads to provide power support directly to the loads, indirectly via devices that distribute power to the loads via branch circuits, etc. The power support redundancy provided to a load is established based at least in part upon which busways are coupled to the load, and power support redundancies can be changed by changing the couplings of particular busways with the loads. The busways can extend through the aisle space in a staggered configuration to enable load balancing between busways by restricting loads in certain regions of the aisle space to coupling with certain busways and not others.

An enclosed type switchgear for receiving electric power from two separate power lines includes first and second circuit breaker chambers arranged side by side and a third circuit breaker chamber provided below the first and second circuit breaker chambers. First and second circuit breakers, the power source side terminals of which connected to the power lines are encased in the first and second circuit breaker chambers, respectively, while a third circuit breaker interconnecting the load side terminals of the first and second circuit breakers is encased in the third circuit breaker chamber. Bus chambers are provided on the rear side of the first, second and third circuit breaker chambers, respectively for encasing conductors interconnecting the first, second and third circuit breakers. All of the chambers and the conductors are arranged symmetrically with respect to the center line of the switchgear for minimizing the kind and number of the conductors interconnecting the circuit breakers.
