In at least some embodiments, a vitrified material control system comprises a melt chamber (8) configured to contain a molten material (27) during operation of the control system; a siphon valve (11) configured to facilitate a flow of the molten material from the melt chamber; and a vacuum-generation system (26, 15, 16) configured to controllably deliver a vacuum to the molten material in the melt chamber and to thereby regulate a flow of the molten material from the melt chamber. In other embodiments, methods of controlling a flow of molten vitrified material from a heating device are disclosed. The methods may include, for example, applying a vacuum to the molten material to control a dwell time of the molten material in a vessel of the heating device and regulating the vacuum based on a measured temperature of the molten material.

摘要: Gradient refractive index elements are fabricated from the melt, using two or more molten glass compositions, to prevent bubble formation in the elements. The individual glass compositions are melted in separate containers, and then added as appropriate to a single crucible. The more dense glasses settle to the bottom of the crucible, while the less dense glasses float on top of the melt layer. As a consequence of using molten glass, no bubbles appear. Batching of the process can be done by the level of the free melt surface, which means that one can control the batched volume of the melted glass by controlling the level of the free melt surface in the crucible.

摘要: The apparatus comprises at least one plunger (2) and a plunger holder (3) which can be raised and lowered. An arm (18) of a tilt lever (17) is coupled to the plunger holder (3). A link member (22) of a drive system (23) cooperates with the other arm (20) of the tilt lever. The link member (22) is adjustable along said other arm (20) in order to change the stroke of the plunger. The drive system (23) comprises an electric servodrive with a take-off shaft (13), the drive being connected to the link member (22) and being controllable by electronic control means. The link member (22) is arranged on a tie rod (26) which at one free end is coupled (28) to a pivot lever (27) which is mounted fixedly in relation to the apparatus. At a central coupling point (30) of the pivot lever (27) is coupled a push rod (32) whose other end is coupled to a crank (14) of the take-off shaft (13).

摘要: Suction molds used in the suction removal process must first be prepared ore they can receive vitrified radioactive waste materials. A method is disclosed for preparing the suction mold which includes a suction pipe welded into the base of the mold with a desired-break location whereat the suction pipe is broken off during the suction removal process. An evacuation stub is mounted in the mouth of the suction pipe and communicates with the interior of the mold. The method of the invention includes evacuating the mold through the evacuation stub and then heating the mold to remove moisture and organic impurities. The mold is then filled with a dry inert gas and the evacuation stub is cleaned. The mold is then evacuated to a predetermined residual pressure. Thereafter, the evacuation stub is cold-press welded so as to close off the interior of the mold from the ambient.

摘要: A silica-rich, volatiles-deficient surface layer is removed from highly viscous glass, near a forming means (rolls or the like). There is used a weir of less-than-usual depth that contains a platinum member that provides a substantially unchanging weir depth; at the same time, Venturi means control the amount of hot gases removed from the glass-melting furnace, to maintain or control the flow of the highly viscous glass. With the invention, it is possible to drain off the silica-rich surface of a highly viscous glass, losing only about 10 percent of the furnace throughput, rather than accepting the higher losses (about 30 percent) required in accordance with previous practices.
