A method is disclosed for straightening a stack (P) of sheet material that has been deformed after conveyance on a roller conveyor (4), the rollers of which are mounted around parallel axes of rotation (5) extending transverse to the direction of conveyance of the stack (P), consists of putting the stack (P) in engagement with a stop surface (32) and driving the axes (5) of the rollers on which the stack (P) rests in a movement of translation in the direction of conveyance of the stack (P), allowing the rollers to rotate freely around their respective axes of rotation (5).

A jogger for straightening material in tiers. The material rests against at least two lateral baffles associated with adjacent sides of a stack-supporting surface. The stack-supporting surface can vibrate. A gantry travels back and forth in the same plane as the stack-supporting surface. The stack-supporting surface can be tilted out of the horizontal toward the two lateral baffles. A top-covering plate (21) is mounted in the gantry (16) and parallels the stack-supporting surface (3). The stack (40) is accommodated between the top-covering plate and the stack-supporting surface. Mechanisms (22) accommodated in the gantry lower the top-covering plate onto and raise it off the stack-supporting surface. Blowers (30 & 31) for forcing wind between the tiers are accommodated in at least one (25) of the lateral baffles (25, 26, & 27). At least one side-covering plate (33 or 34) closes off the space between the stack-supporting surface and the top-covering plate. The side-covering plate can be positioned at a right angle to the first lateral baffle by mechanisms for moving the covering plate toward and away from the parallel second lateral baffle. The stack is accordingly enclosed all around with the exception of an outlet for the wind.

An apparatus and method are provided for neatening stacks of thin products, such as sliced luncheon meat, within a processing and packaging operation. The neatening apparatus receives an uneven stack of foodstuff slices that are generally horizontally oriented, and the apparatus reorients the stack of foodstuff slices by rotating them through a generally vertical orientation and to a generally horizontal outfeed orientation. A tamping assembly is adjacent to the reorienting assembly, and the tamping assembly contacts the peripheral edges of the foodstuff slices in order to tamp and shake same to a neatened condition. A generally horizontally oriented outfeed assembly receives the thus neatened stack at the location of generally horizontal outfeed orientation.

A machine for accumulating and for stacking a plurality of documents in a first plane so that the leading end of the documents are in a shingled relationship. Upon actuation of a system of first and second pairs of feed rollers, the documents in a stack are fed along a path leading to an angularly disposed, first buckle chute of a folding device. While traveling within the first buckle chute, the first and second pairs of feed rollers cause the leading end of the stack of documents to become aligned in relationship, thereby providing squarely folded groups of documents when the folds are made in a folding device within the machine.

A paper jogging apparatus can automatically jog paper sheets due to vibratory action of vibratory plate (19) disposed on an upper portion of a tiltable body (2) simply by tilting the tiltable body (2) having an up-down table (3) vertically movable by an up-down driver (8) and stacking an appropriate number of paper sheets on the up-down table (3) as tilted.

A process and apparatus for aligning paper documents includes a paper jogger having a removable paper tray for receiving a large number of individual paper documents, such as retail store coupons, and adapted to slide onto and to be removably secured to an oscillating platform of the paper jogger for aligning the edges of the paper documents. A removable divider is positioned in the tray to segregate the paper documents in the tray into discrete portions. The tray containing the divider and segregated paper documents is then placed on and secured to the platform for oscillation and resultant paper alignment. After the paper documents are sufficiently aligned, the tray may be removed from the platform for use in storing the aligned paper documents or in conveying the aligned paper documents to subsequent processing stations.

A jogger for aligning stacked sheets of paper or the like comprising a tilted table and a pair of jogger arms pivotally mounted to the table. The jogger arms carry paddle portions which extend above the tabletop along two adjacent sides of the table. Followers on each arm are operatively engaged by a multilobed cam which causes the arms and associated paddles to pivot in synchronism and bring into alignment sheets stacked on the tabletop. A prop may be provided on the tabletop to facilitate the alignment of cross-stacked sheets.
