A method and apparatus to automatically reverse the motor of a dispensing gun or similar tool. The invention includes a controller that automatically reverses the direction of plunger movement and removes the plunger from contact with the back wall of a cartridge. The controller has a trigger switch that is coupled to a power source, such as a battery, and includes a main power on/off switch and a potentiometer. A protection or secondary switch is coupled in parallel to the main power on/off switch. A power supply circuit and a commutator are each coupled to the main and secondary switches. An overload sensor is coupled to the commutator. The controller includes a programmable device that is coupled to the power supply circuit, the potentiometer, the commutator, and the overload sensor. The programmable device is operable to sense actuation and deactuation of the main power on/off switch, read an electromotive force from the potentiometer, and, upon sensing deactuation of the main switch, send a control signal to the commutator to reverse current flow therethrough for a predetermined amount of time, and deactuate the secondary switch when the predetermined time has lapsed.

A method for controlling the operation of a motor utilizing a universal motor control module. The method includes sampling at least one motor operating criterion during operation of the motor and executing a universal control algorithm at a predetermined periodic interval of an AC line signal. Execution of the algorithm provides a firing angle solution for an electronic valve for each periodic interval, thereby controlling the behavior of the motor. Additionally, the method includes firing the electronic valve at the calculated firing angle during each periodic interval such that the motor functions in accordance with desired operational parameters.

A motor for driving a load, such as a tool or a workpiece, can be installed in a machine, for example an eccentric lathe. The motor has an output-drive section associated with the useful load, a reaction section which interacts with the drive section, and a base that rigidly supports the motor in the machine. The reaction section of conventional motors is typically rigidly attached to the machine, so that vibration can be introduced in the machine bed if a strong force is transmitted to or received from the load. According to the invention, these vibrations can be reduced or eliminated by mounting the reaction section on the base in such a way that any movement by the output-drive section can be compensated by a corresponding opposing movement of the reaction section. The inertia of the reaction section hence compensates the corresponding opposing forces in the event of sudden or strong acceleration of the load.

The invention relates to a method for driving an electric motor (1) which is employed, in particular, in manually guided electric tools, such as drilling machines, screwing machines or the like. Variable pulses of an electric voltage are applied to the electric motor (1) in such a way that the rotor of the electric motor (1) moves at a rotational speed which can be set. In order that the rotor of the electric motor (1) moves intermittently or abruptly, at least parts of at least individual pulses are blanked by superposition of a pulse interval having a zero voltage. A circuit arrangement for a method of this type has control electronics (5) and an electronic power switch (4), such as a triac, a transistor, an IGBT or the like, which is switched by the control electronics (5) in such a way that the variable pulses can be applied to the electric motor (1) via the electronic power switch (4). The control electronics (5) further contain means for switching the electronic power switch (4) off during at least parts of at least individual pulses.
