Abstract: Improved systems, methods, and devices for treating sleep apnea are provided herein. In one aspect, an intraoral appliance for treating sleep apnea in a patient comprises an appliance shell comprising a plurality of cavities shaped to receive teeth of a jaw of the patient. The appliance shell can comprise an advancement structure arranged to interact with an opposing jaw of the patient so as to displace the lower jaw anteriorly relative to the upper jaw. The plurality of cavities can comprise cavity geometries shaped to reduce repositioning of one or more received teeth elicited by displacement of the lower jaw anteriorly relative to the upper jaw.

Abstract: A slip-resistant patch for a tongue bulb employs a planar body configured to conform to a surface of the tongue bulb. The planar body has a first major surface and an opposing second major surface. The first major surface is textured and the second major surface is adhesive. The textured material is configured to be positioned on a surface of an oral cavity and maintain position on the surface of the oral cavity throughout lingual movement within the oral cavity. The adhesive material is of a pressure sensitive material and being configured to adhere to the surface of the tongue bulb. At least one tether extends from the planar body along the perimeter portion. The at least one tether is configured to be wrapped around a stem of the tongue bulb for securing the slip-resistant patch to the tongue bulb.

Abstract: Mandibular apparatus have a mandibular tooth covering having a lingual flange extending caudally from a medial surface or posterior surface thereof. The lingual flange has a fin-shaped body that curves posteriorly as it extends caudally and is configured to position an apex thereof more posterior than a molar tooth of a user and that has a medial surface having a shape that is contoured to seat under the user's tongue in contact with the tongue, hyoglossus muscle, and genioglossus muscle, thereby simultaneously lifting the tongue and antero-cranially advancing the hyoid bone. A method of increasing the smallest concentric area of a user's upper airway using such mandibular apparatus are also included.

Abstract: A mouthpiece device and method for helping human users with congested sinuses breathe freely through their mouths while sleeping while minimizing the risks of dry mouth and drooling. The device fits between the user's jaws and is configured to apply a gentle jaw and lip opening pressure sufficient to at least partially open a sleeping user's jaw and lips while the jaw and lip muscles are relaxed. At the same time, the device is configured to so that when the user, while still sleeping, activates their jaw or lip muscles to swallow, this action overcomes the gentle opening force, allowing the user to easily swallow without conscious effort. Methods of configuring the device shape and opening forces are also taught.

Abstract: Described herein is an oral appliance. The oral appliance includes upper and lower trays that each include at least one axial spring configured to contact a palatal/lingual surface of at least one tooth, where each axial spring is coupled to the respective upper or lower tray, and where each axial spring is configured to produce and transmit intermittent, cyclic forces to the palatal/lingual surface of the tooth to promote palatal and upper/lower jaw development. The upper and lower trays each include an expansion mechanism to enable adjustment of the size of the upper and lower trays to account for palatal expansion and upper and lower jaw development. The oral appliance includes first and second adjustable hinge arms that are removably connected to the upper and lower trays so that the oral appliance advances the mandible to provide temporary relief from sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea and/or snoring.

Abstract: A vented dental appliance for relief of bruxism includes an intraoral retainer such as a flexible plate positioned between the teeth and the cheeks of the user. An elongated vent member is slidably positioned through one of a plurality of apertures in the intraoral retainer and includes at least a first fluid conduit connecting the intraoral space and the extraoral space. The intraoral portion of the vent member features multiple intraoral vent openings positioned along thereof and configured to prevent internal blockage by a tongue or other soft tissue inside the mouth. The extraoral portion is open and configured to vent the intraoral space to atmosphere, thereby relieving the intraoral suction and allowing for jaw muscles to relax. In other embodiments, the intraoral retainer may be a dental guard or another more advance dental appliance.
