摘要: The present invention provides optical filters that can be used in a range of telecommunications applications including optical multiplexers/demultiplexers, optical routers, and optical gain scalers. The optical filter is modular, using two or more couplers with a pair of delay paths between each pair of couplers in a sequence to generate a range of optical filter functions. The desired filter profile/function is obtained by proper selection of the coupling ratio for each coupler and by the length of each pair of delay paths. The couplers may be implemented as polarization or intensity beam splitters positioned along the optical path. Each coupler couples in controllable amounts, one or two inputs with the corresponding pair of delay paths. Where a coupler is implemented as a polarization beam splitter, the coupling is accomplished by input to the coupler of polarized light and by the subsequent separation of orthogonal “P” and “S” components of that light onto corresponding ones of the pair of delay paths. Where coupling is implemented with an intensity beam splitter, the coupling is accomplished by input of light with the percentage of reflection and transmission of the light determining the coupling ratio or percentage of the light input onto corresponding ones of the pair of delay paths. The pair of delay paths includes in an embodiment of the invention, passive thermal stabilization. The passive thermal stabilization of the filter(s) is accomplished by a plurality of optical elements positioned in and defining the optical path length of each member of the pair of paths. These optical elements are designed so that the optical path length difference between the pair of delay paths remains substantially invariant across a range of temperatures.

摘要: A method and apparatus for multiplexing/de-multiplexing optical signals is disclosed. The method and apparatus are applicable to a range of optical multiplexing techniques including, but not limited to: wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and frequency division multiple accessing (FDMA). The disclosed devices do not require active components. The disclosed devices may be implemented with fiber or fiberless optical communication systems including telecommunications systems. The devices may be used on their own or as part of a larger system such as a multi-stage mux/demux, an optical switch, or router. Additionally, the devices are passively thermally stabilized with the result that their tuning is substantially invariant across a wide temperature range. The optical device includes a linear polarizer, at least one wave plate and a beam displacer/combiner. The wave plate optically couples to the linear polarizer and rotates both odd and even channel components of an optical beam between a linear and an orthogonal relationship depending on the propagation direction. The wave plate includes a primary and a compensating birefringent element with respective first and second lengths and first and second indices of refraction. The first and second lengths and the first and second indices of refraction together determinative both of a free spectral range for the at least one wave plate corresponding to a spacing between adjacent gridlines of the selected wavelength grid, and of a combined optical pathlength difference for the wave plate substantially invariant with temperature.

摘要: A laser includes a pumping light source for producing a pumping beam and a laser resonator having an input mirror optically coupled to the pumping light source for receiving the pumping beam. The laser resonator also includes an output mirror, a lasant material, and a nonlinear optical material. The nonlinear optical material is placed inside the laser cavity and configured as a half-wave plate or a multiple of a half-wave plate at a first given fundamental lasing wavelength. The lasant material is placed against or near the input mirror of the laser resonator and oscillates in response to the pumping beam so as to generate a fundamental wave including (i) two substantially orthogonal linearly polarized modes at wavelengths at and/or about the first given wavelength, (ii) an additional mode at and/or about a second given wavelength that is relatively close to but different from the first given wavelength. The nonlinear material produces multiple second harmonic linearly polarized mode as its output that are at wavelengths at and/or about half the fundamental wavelengths. The laser resonator further includes a filter arrangement for allowing the additional mode at about the second given wavelength to leak out of the laser resonator. The oscillation of the additional mode at the second given wavelength is suppressed because of the filter arrangement. This results in a laser which produces only two substantially orthogonal linearly polarized fundamental modes at the first given wavelength. This laser has minimized sum frequency generation and its second harmonic output is thus free from "green noise".

摘要: A single mode laser implementation and associated method are disclosed. The laser may accommodate a frequency multiplying material to provide an intracavity doubled single frequency laser. The laser implementation includes an input mirror and an output mirror defining a resonant cavity and a light path within the resonant cavity and between the mirrors. A lasant material is positioned in the light path for lasing at a desired fundamental wavelength and possibly other, unwanted wavelengths. A first birefringent member is also positioned in the light path for refracting in different directions the different wavelengths of light which are present along the path. Also positioned in the light path is a second birefringent member which cooperates with the first birefringent member such that the first and second birefringent members together discriminate between the desired fundamental wavelength and the unwanted wavelengths so that one polarization of the desired fundamental wavelength is refracted in one direction which causes it to lase while certain portions of the unwanted wavelengths are refracted in other directions which cause all polarizations of the unwanted wavelengths to be extinguished.
