Abstract:
A process for manufacturing a polycarbonate composition includes melt polymerizing a dihydroxy compound and a carbonate compound in the presence of a catalyst to form a polycarbonate; and adding 1 to 400 ppm of glycerol tristearate to form the polycarbonate composition, wherein the polycarbonate composition is unquenched.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, a process for preparing an alkyl aryl carbonate and a diaryl carbonate, comprising: reacting a dialkyl carbonate and an aromatic hydroxy compound in a production column 200, 300 to form the alkyl aryl carbonate and the diaryl carbonate; directing a bottom stream of the production column to a reboiler 205, 305, wherein the bottom stream comprises the alkyl aryl carbonate and the diaryl carbonate; heating the bottom stream in the reboiler 205, 305 with heat from an overhead stream of the production column 200, 300 to result in a heated bottom stream; directing a first portion of the heated bottom stream back into the production column 200, 300, wherein the first portion comprises phenol; and collecting the diaryl carbonate and the alkyl aryl carbonate from a second portion of the heated bottom stream.
Abstract:
A continuous process for the manufacture of a polycarbonate comprises: combining an aromatic dihydroxy compound stream and a diaryl carbonate stream to form a mixture; controlling a weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound by: measuring a sound velocity, Vs, in the mixture at an operating temperature of the controlling step; and determining the weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound in the mixture; and adjusting a flow rate of at least one of the aromatic dihydroxy compound stream and the diaryl carbonate stream, if needed, to achieve a desired weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound; and polymerizing the aromatic dihydroxy compound and the diaryl carbonate in the presence of a catalyst to produce the polycarbonate.

Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a polycarbonate composition having improved transparency can comprise reacting an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate under melt polymerization conditions to provide a polycarbonate; and contacting the polycarbonate with a polydiorgano siloxane having a kinematic viscosity of less than 20 mm2/sec at 25° C. as determined in accordance with ASTM D445, and an optional additive thereby making the polycarbonate composition. The polycarbonate composition has haze less than 1% as determined in accordance with ASTM D1003-07, and can be used for optical applications such as automotive headlamps.
