Abstract: A reference signal periodically transmitted by a base station in a wireless network can have certain proprietary properties to help prevent detection and utilization of the signal for unauthorized positioning of mobile devices. More specifically, a network node can obscure and introduce time-variation in mapping between positioning signals and a corresponding physical base stations. The network node may also introduce time variations in fields of a base station almanac (BSA) provided to subscribing user equipments (UEs). The information transmitted to the subscribing UEs may be encrypted.

Abstract: An entity in a wireless network is configured to increase transmission of a positioning reference signal (PRS) at each of a plurality of transmitters, where the increase in transmission of PRS at each of the plurality of transmitters is coordinated to avoid interference to or from non-PRS transmission in the wireless network. The increase in the transmission of PRS may be performed by a server, such as a location management function (LMF) or location management component (LMC), a base station, such as a gNB, ng-eNB, or eNB, or by a combination of the server and base station. The entity may determine the increase in transmission of the PRS in response to location requests for a plurality of user equipments (UEs), notification reports from a plurality of base stations, or requests for increased PRS from a plurality of UEs.

Abstract: In one example, a method comprises: receiving assistance data from a location server; classifying a plurality of candidate cells in the assistance data into a first group of candidate cells and a second group of candidate cells, wherein the classification is based on whether a candidate cell transmits position reference signal (PRS) symbols in one or more multimedia broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN) subframes in a positioning occasion, and based on a cyclic prefix (CP) length of the PRS symbols being transmitted by the candidate cell in the positioning occasion; selecting, based on one or more predetermined criteria, one of the first group or the second group of candidate cells to measure the one or more PRS in the positioning occasion; and measuring the one or more PRS from one of the first group or the second group of candidate cells in the positioning occasion to measure PRS measurements.

Abstract: A mobile device and base station are enabled to support improved positioning accuracy in the presence of phase noise in high frequency radio network, such as in 5G New Radio network operating in mmWave. Phase Tracking Reference Signal (PTRS) may be transmitted with Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) and used for positioning and/or used to correct the phase offset between symbols in the PRS. A request may be made to transmit PTRS alone or with the PRS, or that the PRS is transmitted with a specific PRS frame structure, e.g., with a specific comb value, that minimizes the impact of phase noise. The PTRS or a phase ramp of the staggered symbols in the PRS may be used to estimate and correct the phase offset. Less than all of the symbols transmitted in the PRS may be used to generate positioning measurements to minimize the impact of phase noise.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may report measurements of a signal transmitted by a base station via a waveform. Based on the waveform, the base station may determine a position of the UE. The UE may measure the signal in a frequency band, where additional signaling in an adjacent frequency band causes interference on the signal. The UE may determine characteristics for measuring the signal based on the interference and may generate samples of the signal based on the measurement characteristics. Additionally, the UE may identify one or more antennas for measuring the signal and generate the samples based on the identified antennas. The UE may transmit the waveform report to the base station based on the samples. In some cases, the waveform may be based on a fractional symbol reporting scheme or a time mask with an offset and sampling rate.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support aperiodic and cross component carrier PRSs. Generally, the described techniques provide for receiving a dynamic trigger indicating that a UE is to monitor for one or more downlink positioning reference signals (PRSs). The UE may generate a timing measurement for the one or more downlink PRSs, and may transmit a measurement report that indicates the timing measurement to a transmission/reception point. A UE may also transmit a capability indicator, indicating that the UE is capable of maintaining phase coherence for a PRS that spans multiple component carriers, receive control signaling that indicates multiple component carries on which the PRS is phase coherent, generate a timing measurement for the PRS based on the control signaling, and transmit a measurement report that indicates the timing measurement to the transmission/reception point.

Abstract: Mobile devices often use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to calculate position information of mobile devices within the network. However, physical distance between the mobile device and a signal source for positioning and other environmental factors can influence the signal strength of received signals. Received signals at the mobile device that are stronger may drown out the weaker signals, particularly when two signal sources occupy the same symbol. In traditional OFDM, a signal source transmits the same symbol for each positioning occasion, so a weaker signal may never be detected over a stronger signal, reducing the accuracy of the positioning calculations. Described herein are systems and methods for using a pattern to vary the designated symbol for each signal source in a wireless network so that a weaker signal from a signal source may be detected on at least some of the positioning occasions.

Abstract: Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for determining a UE position within a coverage sub-area of a cell based on cell identity data are presented. In some embodiments, the UE detects one more cell identities, including a cell identity of a serving cell and possibly a cell identity of a neighbor cell of the serving cell. The one or more cell identities are included in cell identity data. The cell identity data is used in a look up of a data structure that associates coverage sub-areas of a coverage area of the serving cell with most likely positions within the coverage sub-areas and with cell identities. The result of the look up indicates that the UE is positioned at a most likely position within a coverage sub-area of the serving cell.

Abstract: Positioning for user equipments (UEs) in a wireless network is supported by restricting position reference signal (PRS) configuration parameters for a Transmission Reception Point (TRP) based on PRS configuration used by co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters for the TRP may be restricted by restricting orthogonality of the PRS resources with respect to PRS resources from co-located TRPs to only code division multiplexing, and other types of orthogonality such as time division multiplexing and frequency divisional multiplexing are not permitted for co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters for the TRP may be restricted to the same muting sequence type, e.g., inter-instance and/or intra-instance muting, as used by co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters, e.g., related to orthogonality and/or muting, are not restricted with respect to non-co-located TRPs. The restrictions on the PRS configuration parameters for a TRP may be determined by a central authority, such as a location server.
