Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. During an operation for discovering reconfigurable surfaces, a sensing signal may be transmitted. Based on the sensing signal being transmitted, another signal may be detected at the device that transmitted the sensing signal, another device, or both. The device that detects the signal may combine the detected signal with a modulation sequence that is associated with a reconfigurable surface, where the reconfigurable surface may be assigned a set of unique modulation sequences and configured to apply a modulation sequence to received signals. Based on combining the detected signal with the modulation sequence, the device may determine whether the reconfigurable surface is present within a geographic region.

Abstract: Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) scheduling provided with respect to wireless communication networks is described. A base station or other network entity may serve as a central node to accommodate RIS sense and/or control requests from user equipments (UEs). A RIS scheduling protocol according to some aspects may provide a technique for avoiding potential collision at the RIS sense and/or control phases of operation with respect to RISs deployed in a wireless communication network. Using RIS scheduling, wireless communication networks may avoid or otherwise mitigate situations in which multiple sensing signals negatively impact RIS detection procedures, multiple control signals causing signal processing problems and/or control issues, and/or interference results from un-coordinated control of multiple RISs. Other aspects and features are also claimed and described.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for determining a number of user equipment in an area. An example method for determining a number of mobile devices in a counting area includes determining the counting area, determining counting configuration information based on the counting area, transmitting the counting configuration information to one or more mobile devices, receiving counting responses from the one or more mobile devices, and determining the number of mobile devices in the counting area based on the counting responses.

Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may receive a first signal associated with a downlink control channel, wherein the first signal uses a modulation signature that identifies a first security key associated with a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and wherein the first signal includes a second security key. The UE may receive a second signal associated with a downlink shared channel, wherein the second signal includes a third security key, and wherein the second signal is authenticated by the UE based at least in part on the first security key, the second security key, and the third security key. Numerous other aspects are described.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for wireless communication that support mechanisms for determining a joint priority of sidelink and access link (Uu) positioning reference signal (PRS) transmissions in a wireless communication system. A joint priority of a PRS transmission may refer to a priority of the PRS transmission over the entire set of PRS transmissions including sidelink PRS transmissions and Uu PRS transmissions transmitted to a target UE in a sidelink positioning session. In aspects, a joint priority of a sidelink PRS transmission from an anchor UE may be determined with respect to not only other sidelink transmissions, but also with respect to other Uu PRS transmissions from other anchor base stations. Similarly, a joint priority of a Uu PRS transmission from an anchor base station may be determined with respect to not only other Uu transmissions, but also with respect to other sidelink PRS transmissions from other anchor UEs.
