    Abstract: A PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) write head includes a main write pole (MP) that is surrounded by magnetic shields, including laterally disposed side shields (SS), a trailing shield (TS) and a leading shield (LS). The leading shield includes a leading-edge taper (LET) that conformally abuts a tapered side of the write pole. The leading-edge shield and the leading-edge taper can be independently recessed in a proximal direction away from an air bearing surface (ABS) plane so that one or the other of them is recessed and the other remains coplanar with the ABS, or both are recessed by independent amounts. In another configuration the LS is not planar but has a recessed portion in a center track region and two surrounding regions that are coplanar with the ABS plane.

    Abstract: A preamplifier that that is configured for optimizing the write current waveform to achieve the best areal density capability (ADC) and adjacent track interference (ATI) performance of a magnetic recording disk drive. The preamplifier is configured for providing a magnetic head write current with a main pole relaxation zone for providing a buffer zone for main pole relaxation from saturation state to a remanence state before writing the next bit. The preamplifier is further configured for providing a magnetic head write current with a reference main pole relaxation current located at an end region data of each bit. The length of the reference main pole relaxation current is a function of the bit length, frequency, recording velocity, and writer/media switching speed.

    Abstract: A method of forming a spin torque assisted magnetic recording writer is disclosed wherein a spin flipping (STO) device is recessed from an air bearing surface. The STO device has a middle flux guiding layer with a magnetization that flips to a direction anti-parallel to the write gap field when a current of sufficient magnitude is applied from the trailing shield towards the main pole (MP) thereby increasing reluctance in the write gap to enhance writability. A STO stack is deposited and patterned to define a cross-track width on the MP tapered trailing side. Thereafter, the STO stack is patterned to define a STO device with a front side recessed from the air bearing surface, and a backside. A write gap is deposited surrounding the STO device, and has a thickness greater than or ≤ to STO thickness to enable design flexibility. Then, first and second trailing shields are formed.

    Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording writer is disclosed wherein a first trailing shield (HMTS) layer has a down-track (DT) thickness d in portions thereof proximate to a center plane that bisects the main pole tip trailing side to enable enhanced trailing shield return field at track center thereby improving bits per inch (BPI) capability. Meanwhile, at off track center positions, that in some embodiments are from 25 nm to 500 nm from the center plane, the HMTS layer has a DT thickness d1, where d1>d, and a smaller dielectric gap between the HMTS layer and the main pole thereby protecting side shield return field and adjacent track interference (ATI) performance. A method of forming the HMTS layer on a write gap is provided and includes patterning the HMTS layer in a back portion to form openings that are filled with the smaller dielectric gap and HTMS layer thickness d1.

    Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording writer has a main pole (MP) with a write gap formed between the MP trailing side and a trailing shield, a side gap between each MP side and a side shield, and a leading gap between the MP leading side and a leading shield. A flux guiding element is formed in at least one gap and comprises an inner non-spin preserving layer adjoining the MP, a middle flux guiding layer (FGL), and an outer spin preserving layer. A key feature is that the FGL has a magnetization that may be aligned anti-parallel to a gap field during a write process when a current of sufficient magnitude is applied from the adjacent shield towards the MP thereby increasing reluctance in the gap and forcing additional flux out of the MP at the air bearing surface to enhance writability on a magnetic recording medium.
