    Abstract: In various implementations, a sensor operates in a force sensing mode by determining an applied force based on a first change in capacitance between first and second electrodes related to compression of a compressible material positioned between while the third electrode functions as a shield and in a proximity sensing mode by sensing proximity of an object based on a second change in capacitance of the third electrode while the first and/or second electrodes function as a shield. In some implementations, a device has a cover glass including a surface having a display area, an edge surface, and a cavity; a touch sensing electrode oriented toward the surface; an electrode positioned in the cavity oriented toward the edge surface; and a processing unit operable to detect touch or proximity of an object to the edge surface based on a change in capacitance between the electrode and the object.

    Abstract: An electronic device is disclosed. In some examples, the electronic device comprises a mechanical input configured to rotate in a first direction about a rotation axis in response to a first input at the mechanical input. In some examples, the electronic device comprises a mechanical input sensor coupled to the mechanical input and configured to sense a rotation of the mechanical input about the rotation axis. In some examples, the electronic device comprises a mechanical input actuator coupled to the mechanical input and configured to rotate the mechanical input in a second direction about the rotation axis. In some examples, the mechanical input comprises a shared driving and sensing segment. In some examples, the mechanical input sensor is configured to sense the rotation of the mechanical input at the shared driving and sensing segment. In some examples, the mechanical input actuator is configured to generate magnetic fields for rotating the mechanical input at the shared driving and sensing segment. In some examples, the mechanical input is further configured to translate along the rotation axis in response to a second input. In some examples, the mechanical input actuator comprises at least one piezoelectric element configured to allow the mechanical input to translate along the rotation axis. In some examples, the mechanical input actuator comprises at least one piezoelectric element configured to rotate the mechanical input in the second direction about the rotation axis.

    Abstract: An optical system includes a housing defining a cylindrical lens array. A first light source is located in the housing and positioned to emit a first wavelength of light into a first field of illumination impinging on the cylindrical lens array. A second light source is located in the housing and positioned to emit a second wavelength of light into a second field of illumination impinging on the cylindrical lens array. The cylindrical lens array alters the first field of illumination and the second field of illumination and increases an overlap between the first field of illumination and the second field of illumination.     Abstract: An electronic device may include an optical proximity sensor system. The optical proximity sensor system may be a transreflective optical proximity sensor system having a light emitter that emits light into a light-emitting region and a light detector that detects light in a light-detecting region. Control circuitry in the device can use the transreflective optical proximity sensor system to detect objects in an object detection region formed where the light-emitting region and light-detecting region overlap. The electronic device may be a pair of headphones in which housing structures such as housing walls define ear cup cavities. Speakers may be provided in the ear cups of the headphones to provide sound to the ear cup cavities. The transreflective optical proximity sensor system can detect the presence of a user's ear in an ear cup cavity.
