摘要:
A process for desensitizing lithographic printing plates is described. The gum for the process comprises an aqueous solution containing a film-forming starch derivative modified with polyoxyethylene or a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene copolymer. The gum reduces the number of spoiled copies printed and the amount of staining on non-image areas.

An offset printing plate is provided comprising a carbon steel substrate with printing and non-printing areas on its surface. The printing areas are made of a light-sensitive top layer material based on derivatives of ortho-naphthoquinonediazide-sulphonic or carboxylic acids or a light-sensitive top layer material comprising a photopolymerizable composition. These printing areas form a relief over the plate surface. The non-printing areas are made of a hydrophilized metal of the substrate hydrophilized carbon steel.A process for making an offset printing plate comprises application, onto a carbon steel substrate, of a light sensitive top layer based on derivatives of ortho-naphthoquinonediazide-sulphonic or carboxylic acids or a light-sensitive top layer comprising a photopolymerizable composition. The thus-applied top layer is dried. Onto the dried top layer an image is transferred from a photo-mask, a diapositive in the case of using a top layer based on derivatives of ortho-naphthoquinonediazide-sulphonic or carboxylic acids, and from a negative in the case of using a top layer comprising a photopolymerizable composition. The image is developed by removing regions of the top layer from the non-printing areas by means of a 0.2-1.5% aqueous solution of alkali metal salts or alkali metal hydroxides at a temperature ranging from 18.degree. to 25.degree. C. The non-printing areas are hydrophilized by means of an aqueous solution containing 5 to 10% of a salt formed by an alkali metal and a cyanide inorganic complex, and 0.5 to 2% of an organic hydrophilic colloid at a temperature ranging from 20.degree. to 50.degree. C.The offset printing plate according to the present invention features a simple structure and a high mechanical strength. A tensile strength of a carbon steel substrate ranges from 32 to 36 kgf/mm.sup.2. Wear-resistance of the non-printing areas is about 0.05 mm.sup.3 /cm.sup.2. The offset printing plate according to the present invention can withstand press runs of about 250,000 prints.

Polysaccharide S-119 is used as a desensitizer in lithographic fountain solutions to maintain non-image areas on a lithographic printing plate in a hydrophilic condition in order to prevent scumming or ink pickup in said areas. S-119 is prepared in aqueous solution which is added to phosphoric acid etch in water plus alcohol to provide a gum concentration of 20-1000 ppm by weight in the fountain solution.

A developer suitable for machine and hand processing may now be made which accomplishes the aforementioned objects which is an aqueous solution comprising 2-propoxyethanol as a detackifying agent, an adjuvant solvent, a nonionic surfactant with a hydrophile-lipophile balance over about 17, and an inorganic salt. A developer/finisher may be prepared by adding thereto a water-soluble polymeric film former which is preferably polyvinyl pyrrolidone. A suspending agent, e.g. polyethylene glycol, is added to hand processing solutions.

A concentrate for dilution with water to obtain a fountain solution for lithographic printing comprises a lithographic desensitizing material dissolved in a vehicle liquid comprising an organic solvent liquid optionally in admixture with water. Preferred desensitizing materials are organo substituted ammonium salts of desensitizing acids and a preferred organic solvent liquid is isopropyl alcohol. The fountain solution obtained on dilution of the concentrate may be used with printing machines having integrated damping/inking equipment.

Aqueous solutions are provided for treating image-bearing lithographic plates. These solutions include as an active polymer component:(a) a polyacrylamide-based polymer wherein from about 3 to about 70 percent of the carbonyl sites are carboxyl groups, and the balance of said sites are amide moieties;(b) a physical blend comprised of from about 97 to about 30 weight percent polyacrylamide and from about 3 to about 70 weight percent polyacrylic acid or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof;(c) a physical blend comprised of polyacrylamide, or polyacrylic acid or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, and at least one polyacrylamide-based polymer as described in (a), said polymers being employed in proportions such that of the total carbonyl sites present in the blend, from about 3 to about 70 percent are carboxyl groups and the balance are amide moieties;(d) a mixture of any two or more of the foregoing; or(e) a mixture of any one or more of the foregoing with up to about 30 percent by weight hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) of each of the polyacrylamide-based polymer, the polyacrylamide, and the polyacrylic acid or salt thereof is from about 5,000 to about 1,000,000.By employing various concentrations of the above described active component in an aqueous solution, and, optionally, by employing in addition other components, solutions and/or emulsions are provided for the developing, gumming, gum etching, cleaning, storage, and the like, of lithographic plates. The method consists in applying the compositions to an image-bearing plate. As a new article, there is produced a lithographic plate bearing an image and having a coating containing the recited active polymer component.
