摘要:
An improved access system for use in a Fiber-In-The-Loop (FITL) communications network is disclosed. The access system comprises a host digital terminal (HDT) and a plurality of subtending optical network units (ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) functions traditionally executed by line interface units (LIUs) within the ONUs are migrated to the HDT, rendering the individual ONUs simpler, cheaper and more reliable. This is made possible by the provision in each ONU of an oversampling codec for sampling (and conversion) of upstream and downstream data at a very high bit rate. The large bandwidths of the data communicated between the ONUs and the HDT are easily handled by the fiber optic medium therebetween.

An optical network includes a first optical cross-connect with a plurality of input ports and a plurality of output ports and a plurality of working channel optical transmitters and a second optical cross-connect with a plurality of input ports and a plurality of output ports and a plurality of working channel optical receivers. The first and second optical cross-connects are interconnected by a primary route and a secondary route. The network includes a protection channel optical transmitter and a protection channel optical receiver. The protection channel transmitter and receiver are adapted to transmit and receive signals in the event of a working channel transmitter or receiver failure.

Techniques for providing normal operation and service restoration capability in the event of failure of terminal equipment or transmission media in a heterogeneous network, such as a hybrid network containing single- and multi-wavelength lightwave communications systems. An optical switching node (OSN) is placed at each node in the ring network to provide the required connections between various fibers and terminal equipment, but having switch states that allow signals on the protection fibers to bypass the terminal equipment at that node. Ring-switched signals propagate around the ring on protection fibers without encountering the terminal equipment at the intervening nodes. To the extent that the protection fiber links between any given pair of nodes are incapable of supporting all the relevant communication regimes, such links are modified to provide such support.

An optical time-division multiplexing transmitter module which includes an optical circulator, an optical coupler which splits in two an optical signal in the form of a pulse beam output from the circulator, first and second double-pass electro-absorption (DPEA) modulators positioned respectively to receive and modulate one and the other of the two split signals, and reflect the modulated signals back through the coupler to the circulator. The coupler multiplexes the reflected signals and directs the multiplexed signals to the circulator which then guides them to exit through a circulator output port. An optical delay circuit is positioned between in the path of one of the split signals so as to delay it relative to the other.
