The board mating surface is positioned on the circuit board to mount the connector to the circuit board. At least a portion of the connector is located below the circuit board, and the remaining portion of the connector is located above the circuit board. The spacer forms two spaced slots for each receiving a flat boardlock therein which has board engaging legs for insertion into holes provided on the circuit board. The boardlock has a section retained by an expanded end of the fastener for securing the boardlock to the spacer.

A guide plate extends between the support arms, and is formed with a plurality of notches to permit the vertical solder tail portions of the conductive terminals to extend downwardly through the guide plate. The terminal positioning frame is formed separately from the main connector frame, and is disposed below the guide plate. The terminal positioning frame is provided with solder tail holes that are registered with the notches in the guide plate to permit extension of the vertical solder tail portions of the conductive terminals therethrough.

An electrical connector for use with a circuit board mainly comprises an insulative housing having a bottom wall which integrally defines therein a receiving portion consisting of a first cavity and a second cavity. A board locking means received within the receiving portion of the housing, includes a base which is integrally formed with a plurality of first attachment portions for retaining the base in the second cavity in a basic status. A pair of retention portions extend downward from the base for elastically latching with the circuit board. A pair of spaced extensive arms each extending downward from the base, integrally form thereon a second attachment portion for retention within the first cavity thereby orienting and retaining the board locking means in the receiving portion of the housing in an enhancement status. A second space further separates the extensive arms from the retention portions thereby reducing a mutual effect in the spatial relationship therebetween.

An ejecting means (16) is connected to each housing (10, 11) for guiding a card to be received in the connector (1) and for ejecting the inserted card. The contacts (13) of each housing (10, 11) are aligned with and inserted in through holes (21) defined through a corresponding daughter board (14) by means of a guiding and fastening means (2) which also securely retains each daughter board (14) at an end of each housing (10, 11). After soldering the contacts (13) and the grounding plates (12) to the corresponding firmly secured daughter board (14), each daughter board (14) is received in a corresponding slot which is mounted to a mother board.

Into each of these fixture retaining slots, a fixture, which is made of an electrically conductive metallic material, is press-fit to fix the insulative housing onto a circuit board. The shield, which is made of an electrically conductive metallic material, comprises a peripheral portion and contact portions in a one-piece body. The peripheral portion covers the perimeter of the engaging portion of the insulative housing, and each of the contact portions extends into a respective fixture retaining slot. With this construction, each fixture is retained in contact with a respective contact portion in a respective fixture retaining slot grounding the shield when the electrical connector is mounted on a circuit board with the fixtures being surface-mounted onto grounding pathways on the circuit board.

A surface mount electrical connector is adapted for mounting to the surface of a printed circuit board in either of two orientations generally perpendicular to each other. A molded dielectric housing has first and second board mounting faces disposed generally perpendicular to each other. A first boardlock-receiving passage is molded in the housing communicating with the first board mounting face and extending in a given direction which defines the direction of parting of a pair of mold dies for molding the housing. A second boardlock-receiving passage is molded in the housing generally perpendicular to the first passage and communicating with the second board mounting face. Each passage includes a set of bearing walls for engaging a boardlock member inserted into the respective passage, with no one bearing wall in either set thereof being in alignment with any other bearing wall in the other set thereof in said given direction. A universal boardlock member is insertable into either passage for selectively mounting either board mounting face of the housing to the printed circuit board.
