A method of producing a built shaft in which at least one part, particularly a cam, is mounted on the shaft, particularly a camshaft, includes inserting the shaft into an opening of the part. Before mounting the part, the shaft is stretched by a stretching and tightening device such that an original diameter in the area of at least one fastening location is reduced to a stretched diameter. The part is slid onto the shaft and up to the fastening location. The stretching and tightening device is then loosened to enable the diameter of the shaft to enlarge once more towards its original diameter. The part is firmly fastened at the fastening location by an interference fit in both an axial and rotationally fixed manner.

A Method for the linking of cam rings to hollow shafts. In a first process step, the cam rings are manufactured, so as to generate their function-related contour, from two individual rings of different material connected to each other in a force-and form-closing manner, with the material of the outer ring being hard and elastic and having a permissible residual expansion of at least 0.5%, and that of the inner ring being soft and plastically deformable. The cam rings together with the hollow shaft to be deformed are placed into an internal high pressure forming tool in a manner to suit the respective function. In a second process step through the application of an internal high pressure forming process and, due to the internal pressure exerted the cam rings are joined to the hollow shaft in a force-and form-closing manner. In a particular embodiment, the cam rings consist of two rings joined with each other in a force-and-form-closing manner with the inner ring being made of soft, plastically deformable material and the outer ring being made of a hard, elastic material.

The invention is characterized in that the cam ring is produced in terms of its material properties such that in its outer zone (3) the material is hard and resilient over a specific length while exhibiting nevertheless low plastic deformation, the zone located beneath being relatively flexible and plastically deformable. The inventive camshafts are used almost exclusively in motor vehicles engines.

The invention relates to a method for producing a hollow shaft, in particular a camshaft according to an internal high-pressure forming (IHF) process. According to said method, cams and/or machine elements are mounted at intervals onto the outer surface of the hollow shaft, depending on the use of the latter, by a non-positive and/or positive fit, in a position appropriate to their function. The invention also relates to a hollow shaft produced according to said method. The invention aims to improve the efficiency of the method. To achieve this: the cams and/or machine elements required for the function of the hollow shaft (1) are pushed onto and positioned on the shaft in a location and position related to their function, when the hollow shaft is placed in the forming tool; an element (5) with approximately the same external diameter as the internal diameter of the hollow shaft is placed in at least one end of said shaft; the hollow shaft together with the cams and/or machine elements that have been pushed onto the same and the inserted element are placed in an IHF tool; once the IHF tool has been closed, a medium is caused to act under the required high-pressure in the hollow shaft.

A device and method for joining fitting parts provided with a passage opening on hollow profiles through partial expansion of the hollow profiles at the location of the fitting parts is provided. The fitting parts are slid on with the passage openings and are held in position by means of fluid high internal pressure expansion of the hollow profile. The device includes an expanding lance, which can be slid into the hollow profile and exhibits an axial borehole for the purpose of guiding the pressure fluid. The axial borehole is connected to a fluid high pressure generating system and exhibits a cross channel with an outlet for the pressure fluid in the direction of the hollow profile location to be expanded. The shell surface of the expanding lance exhibits sealing elements that are spaced apart and that define the outlet so as to seal axially on both sides against high pressure. To a reliable joining of the fitting parts on hollow profiles even when the hollow profiles exhibit small outer diameters, it is proposed that the expanding lance comprises two separate, aligned oblong components, of which at least one bears the axial borehole which empties freely on an end face near the outlet. The facing ends of the lance components form the cross channel for the axial borehole of the expanding lance. Furthermore, the device includes a drive unit operable to drive the two lance components into respective hollow profile ends, and are supported on an end side during the expansion phase.

The annular projections further have, on sides that are adjacent to non-round individual parts, an annular portion of approximately a half wall thickness that complements a wall thickness of the adjacent non-round individual part so as to achieve a full wall thickness of the shaft. The multiple individual parts further include round individual parts that have an internal diameter that fits exactly on an external diameter of the annular projections.

A lightweight composite tubular camshaft having an array of cams positioned therealong and method of making same wherein an array of blind predrilled holes into an outer surface of a hollow camshaft tube keyway. Each cam has a keyway groove opening to one side of, and to the inner surface of, a cam through-bore preformed for mounting close fitting on the tube at a preselected tube hole cam location to provide a desired angular orientation timing of the cams upon assembly on the tube. One end of a timing pin key is inserted in each blind hole and the opposite pin end protrudes therefrom. Each cam is slid into its axial location with its groove engaging the pin protruding end to locate the cam in its desired angular orientation. The cams are then permanently locked in position by permanent deformation expansion of the tube into interference engagement with the respective cams. Preferably, both the tube and cam keyways as well as key pin are cylindrical, and the key is a hollow resilient sheet metal split sleeve. The key pin sleeve is circumferentially compressed to fit one end of the key pin in the camshaft tube keyway hole and is self-retaining therein.
