A method includes selecting one or more metal particles to be used in conjunction with one or more zinc oxide particles in a sunscreen composition, wherein said selecting is based on the plasmon resonance frequency associated with each of the metal particles; and embedding the one or more selected metal particles into each of the one or more zinc oxide particles.

Optically-activated systems and methods for reducing the appearance of dark under eye circles are provided. The systems comprise a complex of a fluorescent compound and a substrate for the fluorescent compound which are affixed to one another by covalent bonding, hydrogen bonding, Van der Waals forces, or a combination thereof. After absorption of ambient light, the fluorescent compound in the complex re-emits visible light of longer wavelength. The re-emitted light provides an illuminating radiant effect and is particularly useful in improving the appearance of skin imperfections.

Described herein is a hair treatment composition for the hair. The hair treatment composition includes one or more fluorescent compounds and one or more additional ingredients. The one or more fluorescent compounds each include a fluorophore, one or two permanent cations, and one to four incipient cations. The one to four incipient cations are pendant to the core structure and are neutral. The one or more fluorescent compounds enter the hair shaft after the hair treatment composition is applied to the hair. The hair treatment composition has a pH of from about 7 to about 11.

Silicon-containing particles are used for protection of human cells from electromagnetic radiation in the UV range and optionally in the visible as far as the IR range, where the particles preferably take the form of clusters of primary particles having a particle size in the range from 5 to 100 nm. A particular advantage is the possibility of matching the absorption of the electromagnetic radiation to the wavelength region to be absorbed in a defined manner via the particle size. The silicon-containing particles can be used for biocompatible and biodegradable UV protection in cosmetic or medical formulations, such as preferably a sunscreen, or else in a cosmetic formulation for the UV protection of hair.
