Abstract: A depth of cut control (DOCC) assembly includes a DOCC element positioned in a retainer pocket along a drill bit blade to limit a depth of cut of one or more fixed cutters. A retention member initially retains the DOCC element within the retainer pocket at a first exposure position. The retention member is configured to release the DOCC element downhole to allow one-way movement of the DOCC element to a second exposure position.

Abstract: A nested drill bit assembly is disclosed for drilling a wellbore, comprising a parent bit and at least one child bit nested within the parent bit. Each bit in the nested drill bit assembly may be driven by a respective casing that gets cemented in place as part of a drilling with casing system. The parent bit and child bit(s) may be rotated together, with the parent bit and child bit collectively defining a contiguous cutting profile for drilling an initial segment of the wellbore. A driver is then lowered into the casing for connection to the child bit to drill beyond the parent bit. The driver may be configured as a drive bit for drilling through material leftover from a cementing operation prior to connecting to the child bit.

Abstract: A hybrid bit includes an earth-boring element and a percussion element. The earth-boring element and the percussion element are coaxially arranged, with the earth-boring element surrounding the percussion element. A reciprocating member of the percussion element may oscillate in a manner that enables a bottom end of the reciprocating member to repeatedly protrude from a bottom end of the earth-boring element and to be repeatedly withdrawn. A configuration of the earth-boring element may enable it to drill into and remove some materials from an earth formation, while the percussion element may enable the hybrid bit to drill into and remove difficult-to-drill materials, including abrasive materials and/or materials with high compressive forces, such as chert.

Abstract: The force modulation system for a drill bit includes a cutter, a blade cap, a cap retention device, and a first force member. The cutter or cutters fit in the blade cap, and the blade cap fits to the drill bit. The cap retention device exerts a cap retention force in a first direction. The first force member exerts a first force in a second direction. The cutting profile of the force modulation system is now variable in more than one direction so as to avoid excessive forces from more than one direction for each cutter on the blade cap. There can also be a second force member to exert a second force in the first direction for more variability of the cutting profile in the first direction and a third force member to exert a third force in an opposite second direction.

Abstract: The force modulation system for a drill bit includes a cutter, a holder, a holder retention device, and a first force member. The cutter fits in the holder, and the holder fits in the drill bit. The holder retention device exerts a holder retention force in a first direction. The first force member exerts a first force in a second direction. The second direction is angled offset to the first direction so as that the cutting profile of the force modulation system is now variable in the second direction, according to the first force. There can also be a second force member to exert a second force in the first direction for more variability of the cutting profile in the first direction. The second force member can be made integral with the first force member.

Abstract: A drilling system having retractable wings and method of using same. The system includes at least one wing, which can extend from the system once it engages in a casing and abuts against an abutment ring at the bottom end of the casing. When the system starts drilling a hole into the ground, the casing is installed down the hole. In one configuration, the at least one wing is at least partially retracted into the drilling system and locked in this position. In another configuration, the at least one wing extends from the drilling system and locks into an extended position. The system can be connected to a down-the-hole hammer, a top-hammer drilling rod, or any other suitable rock drilling tool/apparatus, and can be used with a single and a dual rotary drilling tool/apparatus.

Abstract: A shrouded screw apparatus includes an outer tube, a telescoping inner tube, an auger bit, and an anti-rotation pin. The outer tube has a first sidewall defining a first interior chamber. The first sidewall has an opening defined therethrough. The inner tube is positioned in the first interior chamber. The inner tube has a second sidewall defining a second interior chamber. The second sidewall has a longitudinal groove defined therein. The inner tube is configured to extend from and retract within the first interior chamber of the outer tube. The auger bit is positioned in the second interior chamber and is rotatably coupled to the inner tube. The anti-rotation pin is coupled to the first sidewall of the outer tube and extends inwardly into the first interior chamber. The pin engages the longitudinal groove of the inner tube.

Abstract: A rotary drill bit for use with a horizontal directional drill string. A coupler at a proximal axial end is configured to attach the rotary drill bit to a drill head at a distal end of the drill string. A cutting portion at a distal axial end is provided with a plurality of vanes with respective cutters that operate to cut a hole in earth when the rotary drill bit is rotated about a central axis. The plurality of vanes project radially outwardly from a surface of the cutting portion such that the surface forms respective troughs circumferentially interspersed with the plurality of vanes. A plurality of engagement features is positioned axially within the cutting portion and radially inward of an outer cutting diameter to facilitate attachment of a product pullback device between the plurality of vanes without removing the rotary drill bit, or any portion thereof, from the drill head.
