Reduced computation time for model predictive control (MPC) of a five level dual T-type drive considering the DC link capacitor balancing, the common-mode voltage (CMV) along with torque control of an open-ends induction motor based on determining a reduced set of switching states for the MPC. The reduced set of switching states are determined by considering either CMV reduction (CMVR) or CMV elimination (CMVE). Cost function minimization generates a voltage vector, which is used to produce gating signals for the converter switches. The reduced switching state MPC significantly reduces computation time and improves MPC performance.

The motor controller includes a first saturation controller to generate a first saturation controller output based on feedback signals associated with the electric motor. The motor controller further includes a duty ratio modulator coupled to the first saturation controller. The duty ratio modulator is configured to determine activation times for a set of voltage vectors based on the first saturation controller output. The motor controller is configured to generate, at each switching cycle, a control signal based on the set of voltage vectors and the activation times for the set of voltage vectors, and provide the control signal for controlling the electric motor.

The secondary loop, utilizing a faster sampling rate than that of the primary loop, compares the measured phase current to a preset current limit. If the secondary loop determines that the measured phase current has exceeded the preset current limit, it sets a null voltage vector, thereby limiting transient over currents.

A phase-current computing unit obtains an estimated value for the three-phase current on the basis of a current flowing DC buses and the vector commands. At least two of the vector commands that are time integrals of different ones of the non-zero voltage vectors have magnitudes greater than or equal to a predetermined value corresponding to a minimum required amount of time to maintain switching patterns in order for the phase-current computing unit to detect the current.
