Abstract: A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system that provides a large field-of-view (FOV) includes an angle tolerant birefringent electro-optic shutter, an optical system, and one or more image sensors. The electro-optic shutter includes a birefringent material. The optical system is configured to receive optical pulses that are reflected from an environment and that include a first set of angles. The optical system is configured to compress the first set of angles into a second set of angles below a threshold angle associated with the birefringent material. The electro-optic shutter is configured to receive the optical signals with the second set of angles. The image sensor(s) are configured to generate an image of the environment based on the optical pulses with the second set of angles that pass through the electro-optic shutter.

Abstract: Autonomous ground vehicles capture images during operation, and process the images to recognize ground surfaces or features within their vicinity, such as by providing the images to a segmentation network trained to recognize the ground surfaces or features. Semantic maps of the ground surfaces or features are generated from the processed images. A point on a semantic map is selected, and the autonomous ground vehicle is instructed to travel to a location corresponding to the selected point. The point is selected in accordance with one or more goals, such as to maintain the autonomous ground vehicle at a selected distance from a roadway or other hazardous surface, or along a centerline of a sidewalk.

Abstract: A current limiter for protecting a motor from overheating. An algorithm is disclosed for dynamically limiting the motor current, such as motors used in robotics. The algorithm uses a thermal model of the motor, which provides a real-time estimate of a coil temperature using instantaneous power consumption of the motor and a thermocouple measurement from the motor's printed circuit board. There are multiple potential outputs from the current limiter algorithm, such as the maximum power that can be consumed without overheating the coils, and an estimate of how long the motor could deliver a specified high torque before overheating.
