4-substituted 3,3-dimethyl-butan-2-ones of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents cyano or the group --X--R',whereinR.sup.1 represents n-alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, isopropyl, isobutyl, sec.-butyl, alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms, alkynyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms, optionally substituted aryl or substituted aralkyl, or represents cyano provided that X represents --O-- or --S--, andX represents --O--, --S--, --SO--, or --SO.sub.2 --,which are intermediates for the synthesis of fungicides.
