The controller determines at least one characteristic of the motor, identifies the motor from a plurality of possible known motors based on the at least one characteristic, identifies the rotor from a plurality of possible known rotors based on the at least one characteristic, and configures at least one motor operation parameter based on the identity of the motor and/or rotor. The at least one characteristic may include the resistance of a stator coil and/or a magnetic flux constant.
