Embodiments are directed to systems and methods related to updating a balance on a portable device through a load transaction process. In some embodiments, a transaction request message with a load indicator contained on a transaction amount data field may be sent from an access device to an issuer. The requested load amount may be contained in another data field. The load indicator in the transaction amount data field may prompt the issuer to recognize the transaction request message as a load transaction message. Thus, clearing and settlement processes need not be performed between the acquirer and the issuer. Upon confirming that a payment account identified in the transaction request message has sufficient funds, the issuer generates a transaction response message approving the load transaction. The transaction response message may include a script for updating the balance on the portable device.
