Abstract: A system comprises an encoder configured to compress media objects using a compression loop that includes a residual decomposition component that decomposes a residual signal for a block of the media object being compressed into multiple sub-error signals. The encoder is further configured to enable different transformation and/or quantization processes to be specified to be applied to different ones of the sub-errors. A corresponding decoder is configured to apply inverse transformation/quantization processing to the sub-error signals, based on the transformation/quantization processes that were applied at the encoder. The decoder then re-creates a residual signal from the processed sub-error signals and uses the re-created residual signal to correct predicted values at the decoder.

According to one embodiment, a method for compression includes receiving a first image and a first scheme as inputs for an autoencoder network; determining a first Lagrange multiplier based on the first scheme; and using the first image and the first Lagrange multiplier as inputs, computing a second image from the autoencoder network. The autoencoder network is trained using a plurality of Lagrange multipliers and a second image as training inputs.

Abstract: A coding method and a decoding method for decoding a coded data stream representative of at least one image that is split into blocks. For at least one current block of the image, an item of information indicating a coding mode of the current block is decoded from the data stream. When the coding mode of the current block corresponds to a first coding mode, the current block is decoded using a first determined quantization step to dequantize, in the transform domain, a prediction residue associated with the current block. When the coding mode of the current block corresponds to a second coding mode, the current block is decoded using a second determined quantization step to dequantize, in the spatial domain, a prediction residue associated with the current block. The first quantization step and the second quantization step are determined according to the same quantization parameter.

The versatile Lagrangian multiplier may not only account for the effects of quantization (e.g., a quantization parameter (QP), etc.) on portions of the content item, instead, the versatile Lagrangian multiplier may also be based on adjustment parameters associated with content resolution and/or playback quality of experience (QoE). The versatile Lagrangian multiplier enables a substantial decrease in transmission bitrate for portions of a content item without reducing the visual presentation quality and keeping an end-user quality of experience (QoE) at an optimal level.

Abstract: A method of encoding input data to generate corresponding encoded data is provided. The method includes encoding the input data into a plurality of symbols in the encoded data, wherein the plurality of symbols represent data as defined by a plurality of palettes indicated and/or included in the encoded data. The method further includes determining mutually different palettes to be used for encoding mutually different parts of the input data, and using the mutually different palettes for encoding the mutually different parts of the input data. Moreover, the method also includes including, within the encoded data, information associating the mutually different palettes with their respective parts of the input data encoded into the encoded data, wherein the information includes palette selection indices for referencing the mutually different palettes on a block-by-block basis.
