Abstract: Methods of evaluating mechanical fatigue using nondestructive techniques are described herein. Such techniques involve mechanically testing a component to establish a relationship between some measure of actuation and a temperature profile produced during the testing. Measurements from a separate external heating test that generates a similar temperature profile on the component may then be used to generate an estimate of a fatigue lifespan of the component by utilizing data from those tests.

Abstract: A racquet extending along a longitudinal axis and including a frame including a head portion, a handle portion, and a throat portion. The head portion forms a hoop that defines a string bed plane. At least the head portion and the throat portion of the frame are formed at least in part of a fiber composite material. When the racquet is tested under the racquet lateral bending test, the racquet has a lateral deflection of at least 6.0 mm when measured in a direction that is parallel to the string bed plane and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

Abstract: Whether an internal defect is present in an inspection target is readily judged. Provided is an inspection method for an inspection target that is a layered structure including an FRP material and/or a structure made of resin, the method including the steps of: tapping, with a tapping tool, an inspection target area on a surface of the inspection target; detecting, by an accelerometer mounted to the tapping tool, an acceleration signal corresponding to acceleration of the tapping tool due to reaction force against the tapping; recording waveform data about the detected acceleration signal; creating a contour map corresponding to the inspection target area, based on the recorded waveform data; displaying the contour map on a display unit; and judging whether an internal defect is present in the inspection target, based on the contour map displayed on the display unit.

Abstract: A method is provided for increasing accuracy in measuring complex Young's modulus and complex shear modulus of a material using a processing system. The material is tested to obtain an experimental frequency response transfer function of normal displacement to input force. A model panel is developed in the processing system as a modeled frequency response transfer function. The modeled transfer function is used at a range of fixed frequencies to calculate displacements of the model panel divided by the input force while varying material parameters. The modeled frequency response transfer function is compared with the experimental frequency response transfer function to compute error function values. These values indicate the most accurate material property values as those minimizing the computed error function values.

Abstract: Water-absorbent resin particles 10a having a gel surface elasticity measured by the following (1) to (5) is 0.35 to 2.00 N: (1) preparing a gel of the water-absorbent resin particles, (2) bringing a jig into contact with the gel, (3) performing an operation of pressing the jig into the gel and thereafter pulling the jig back to obtain a maximum value and a minimum value of loads applied to the jig during the operation, (4) repeating twice an operation of pressing the jig into the gel and thereafter pulling the jig back to obtain a maximum value and a minimum value of loads applied to the jig during each of operations, and (5) obtaining an average value of maximum values obtained in (3) and (4) and an average value of minimum values obtained in (3) and (4) to obtain a difference between these values as the gel surface elasticity.

Abstract: A bending apparatus for a sample is disclosed. The bending apparatus includes a translation mechanism that translates a vertical displacement/force into a horizontal displacement/force for bending. Components of the bending apparatus are fabricated from a strong, radiolucent material. In these ways, the bending apparatus is compatible with micro-CT imaging, and as such, may be used to bend a sample during imaging. In a particular application, the bending apparatus may be used to measure biomechanical properties of a bone, such as bone strength, bone material properties, fracture toughness, and fracture propagation.

Abstract: Some materials desired to acquire mechanical characteristics and fatigue characteristics are difficult to make in a large-size bulk material for a test piece. The invention provides a test jig which includes a primary jig which fixes both sides of a test piece, which is a test object, an upper jig which includes a load portion to load a weight on two places of an upper surface and two places of a lower surface of the primary jig, and a lower jig which includes a load portion to load a weight on two places of the upper surface and two places of the lower surface of the primary jig. The upper surface and the lower surface of the primary jig disposed on both sides of the test piece are on almost the same flat surface.
