Abstract: An apparatus is described herein related to remote monitoring of perishable trade items in environmentally-controlled storage containers. Relevant changes in the container environment are detected through various sensors-based event detectors. A timer serves to trigger a plurality of distinct alert states, comprising pre-alerts and full alerts, following an event-initiated time threshold expiry. A data repository of generic merchandise data is accessed in order to derive suitable timer pre-sets in relation to time thresholds for alert states. An account configuration engine serves to customize the threshold presets to the specific items stored inside the container.

Abstract: Provided herein is a moisture barrier film for packaging, such as tobacco or cigarette packaging. The film comprises polylactic acid (“PLA”) that is both biodegradable and transparent. The film includes multiple layers of PLA, with a base layer having a relatively high melting point compared to two outer layers, which have a relatively low melting point. The outer layers provide heat sealing capabilities to the film. The film is coated with a metal oxide layer comprised of aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, and/or aluminum-titanium oxide using an atomic layer deposition (“ALD”) coating method. The ALD coating to the PLA film results in a moisture transmission rate of less than 4 g/m2/day after the film has been subjected to creasing, which induces cracking of the ALD metal oxide layer.

Abstract: A storage tube for a smoking material includes a hollow tube extending along a central longitudinal axis from an open first tube end to a closed or closable second tube end. The tube has a sidewall with an inside surface and a cross-sectional dimension sized to receive a smoking material, wherein the second tube end has a lower inside end surface extending transversely to the central longitudinal axis. An upper end cap is removably attachable to the first tube end and forms an air-tight seal. A rigid protrusion extends axially into the tube from the lower inside end surface and has a protrusion body and a protrusion tip. The protrusion defines a gap between the protrusion body and the inside surface of the sidewall. Optionally, the protrusion is removable.
