Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a ventricular assist device that includes a tube configured to traverse a subject's aortic valve. The tube defines a generally-cylindrical central portion, and a proximal conical portion that narrows from a proximal end of the central portion to a proximal end of the tube. The tube defines one or more blood inlet openings in a vicinity of a distal end of the tube, and one or more blood outlet openings that extend axially from the central portion of the tube at least partially into the proximal conical portion of the tube. A blood pump pumps blood into the tube from the subject's left ventricle through the one or more blood inlet openings, and from the tube into the aorta through the one or more blood outlet openings. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a left ventricular assist device that includes an axial flow impeller configured to be disposed within a subject's left ventricle and to pump blood axially from the subject's left ventricle to the subject's aorta. A frame is disposed around the impeller, the frame being shaped such that, in a non-radially-constrained configuration of the frame, the frame defines a central cylindrical portion, and a distal conical portion. The frame is at least partially covered with one or more tube portions, the tube portions defining one or more blood-inlet openings that are configured to allow blood to flow from the subject's left ventricle into the tube portions, wherein at least some of the one or more blood-inlet openings are at least partially disposed over the distal conical portion of the frame. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Systems and method for powering an implanted blood pump are disclosed herein. The system can be a mechanical circulatory support system. The mechanical circulatory support system can include an implantable blood pump. The implantable blood pump includes a DC powered pump control unit that can control the blood pump according to one or several stored instructions. The implantable blood pump includes a rectifier electrically connected to the pump control unit. The implantable rectifier can convert the AC to DC for powering the pump control unit. The system can include an external controller electrically connected to the rectifier. The external controller can provide AC electrical power to the implantable blood pump.

The thermoformed reinforced end portions may be stiffer than a medial portion of the cannula, allowing the medial portion of the cannula body to stretch and bend more readily than the cannula ends when the cannula is subject to an applied stress, reducing the stress and strain on the cannula ends.

Abstract: A catheter (20), which can be part of an intravascular blood pump, possesses a kink sensor which extends over the total length of the catheter and comprises an optical fiber (28A). The optical fiber is attached to an evaluation device (100) which evaluates a preset light quantity transmitted through the optical fiber as to whether a part of the light quantity is coupled out of the optical fiber along the length of the optical fiber. This is interpreted as a kink event and displayed. The optical fiber preferably utilized for the kink sensor is the optical fiber of an optical pressure sensor.

Abstract: Embodiments in the present disclosure relate to an anchoring and centering device for a circulatory support pump. An exemplary apparatus comprises an expandable anchoring device extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein the expandable anchoring device is arranged about a central axis. A distal portion of the expandable anchoring device defines an annulus through which the cardiac pump can be arranged and to which the cardiac pump can be releasable coupled. A proximal portion of the expandable anchoring device is configured to circumferentially expand to an unconstrained configuration that has a cross-sectional diameter greater than a diameter of the annulus. The exemplary apparatus also includes a constraining member arranged over the expandable anchoring device to constrain the expandable anchoring device in a constrained configuration for delivery of the anchoring apparatus.
