Abstract: A system and method to increase solar system efficiency via a novel symmetric direct current regulation (SDCR) system to maximize useable solar power and optimize storage of energy in battery pack systems. The SDCR system maximizes delivery of generated solar power to the battery storage, utility grid or local building loads. The SDCR system comprises a plurality of photovoltaic arrays whose output voltage is mapped to the operational voltage of a LiFePO4 battery storage system and a grid-tied inverter. Efficiency is increased by approximately 30% via (a) the elimination of in-line charge controllers for stepping down power from the PV array to the battery pack, and (b) the elimination of boost controllers for stepping up power to the requirements of the inverter. Thus, the SDCR system is able to support low-loss symmetric delivery of electrical power to both the battery storage pack and the inverter.

Abstract: A charging control system for charging a secondary battery from a solar battery, including a first path for transmitting power from the solar battery to the secondary battery, a second path for sensing the voltage of the secondary battery, and a comparison unit for comparing the solar battery voltage with the sensed voltage of the secondary battery. The first path includes a first interrupter, controlled by the comparison unit, which interrupts the first path to prevent discharge of the secondary battery through the solar battery when the solar battery voltage falls below the secondary battery voltage. The second path includes a second interrupter that interrupts the second path after the first path is interrupted, to prevent the secondary battery from discharging through the second path when not being charged through the first path.

Abstract: A multi-function power converting apparatus including an inverter circuit and a controller is provided. The inverter circuit drives a load. The controller generates a control signal according to a sampled DC voltage, a sampled AC voltage, a load current, and an output current. The controller causes the inverter circuit to enter an uninterruptible power supply mode or a grid-connected power supply mode through the control signal. Specifically, when the inverter circuit enters the grid-connected power supply mode, the multi-function power converting apparatus operates in one of a mixed real-virtual power output mode, a rectification charging mode, an active filtering mode, and an active power balancing mode.

Abstract: A system is provided that includes a gateway node and terminal node. The gateway node includes an actuator configured to produce a light beam for propagation through a fluid, and a sensor configured to detect a reflection of the light beam. The terminal node is disposed within the fluid and includes an energy source and a photovoltaic layer adjacent to a reflective layer. The photovoltaic layer is switchably controlled between two modes, to convey a data stream associated with the reflected light beam to the sensor of the gateway node, the two modes including: a transmission mode wherein the light beam is transmitted through the photovoltaic layer and reflected by the adjacent reflective layer to the sensor of the gateway node, and a recharging mode wherein the photovoltaic layer is configured to capture photonic energy from the light beam for storage in the energy source.

Abstract: The present application discloses a method for optimized design of an independent micro-grid system, the independent micro-grid system comprising diesel generators, wind powered generators, a photovoltaic array, and an energy storage battery, the optimization method referring specifically to a multi-objective optimization design model based on the independent micro-grid system. In terms of the optimization planning design model, the method takes into account a combined start-up mode for a plurality of diesel generators and a control strategy for coordinating between the energy storage battery and the diesel generators, such that the usage rate of renewable energy in the independent micro-grid is higher, and operations more economical and environmentally friendly. Regarding the stability of the system optimization planning design model, the method takes into account the reserve capacity needed for stability of the independent micro-grid. In terms of the solving algorithm of the optimization planning design model, the method employs a multi-objective genetic algorithm based on NSGA-II to implement multi-objective problem-solving, thereby allowing a multi-objective optimization of the three major objectives of economy, reliability, and environmental friendliness of an independent micro-grid system.

Abstract: A method is provided, repeated over successive time slots, for controlling the distribution of power from a time varying renewable power source between a battery and a power grid. The method comprises comparing the maximum input power of a battery with the power output of the time varying power source and determining a ratio for distributing the power between the battery and the power grid based on the comparison. Wherein distributing the output power to the energy storage device as a priority when the output power of the power source is below the maximum input power of the energy storage device; and increasing the ratio for the grid and decreasing the ratio for the energy storage device as the output power of the power source increases above the maximum input power of the energy storage device. The surplus power produced by the power source, above the maximum input power of the energy storage device, is discarded when the output power is distributed to the energy storage device.
