Abstract:
An optical disc device includes a pickup, a driving mechanism that drives the pickup, and a driving controlling portion that applies an initial driving voltage to the driving mechanism over a specific time interval up until the pickup arrives at an outermost position on an outer peripheral side, the initial driving voltage causing the pickup to arrive at the outermost position. After the specific time interval has elapsed, the driving controlling portion applies, to the driving mechanism, an adjustment driving voltage of a voltage amplitude less than a voltage amplitude of the initial driving voltage or a driving frequency less than a driving frequency of the initial driving voltage.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a scanner comprising: a reflector component; means supporting the reflector component for pivoting with respect to the MCR to provide a scan which is stationary with respect to the OCR; means for enabling the support means to provide controlled pivoting of the reflector component; a magnet component which causes pivoting of the reflector component when actuated; and means for actuating the magnet component to thereby cause pivoting of the reflector component. Also provided is a scanner comprising a reflective prism for providing a circularized scanning beam, a prism carrier and magnet suspension assembly, and flexure means connected to the assembly to enable the prism to controllably pivot: (1) with respect to the MCR axis to provide a scan which is stationary with respect to the OCR; and (2) with respect to a pitch axis orthogonal to the MCR to provide an orthogonal scan.

A magnetically suspended CD-ROM drive is proposed, which is characterized by using electromagnetic attraction/repulsion force to move a disc-holding support tray for loading or ejecting a compact disc into or out of the CD-ROM drive. Without employing a gear mechanism of a conventional CD-ROM drive for mechanically operating the support tray, this magnetically suspended CD-ROM drive is beneficial as not having to install additional equipment such as a read/write head moving device, thereby making fabrication processes and equipment maintenance more cost-effective to implement.
Abstract:
An optical scanning device (21) is for scanning with a radiation beam a substantially circular track of an information layer (22). The device includes: (i) a radiation source (26) for providing the radiation beam (34), (ii) a lens system (27) for transforming the radiation beam to a scanning spot (38) in the information layer, the lens system including a first objective lens assembly (39) having an optical axis (CC′), (iii) a head rotation unit (59) for the first objective lens assembly which is rotatable about an axis of rotation (BB′), and (iv) first driving means (60) for rotating the head rotation unit about the axis of rotation. The center of curvature of the track substantially coincides with the axis of rotation. According to the invention, the objective lens assembly is movable substantially in a radial direction with respect to and perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
Abstract:
An optical head comprises an integrated unit for recording and reproducing page data on a reflective recording medium, wherein the integrated unit includes recording and reproducing units each corresponding to a bit of data of the page data, wherein each of the recording and reproducing units has a light emitter for emitting an object beam and a reference beam, an optical switch for transmitting or blocking the object beam, and a detector. Each of the recording and reproducing units records a bit of data corresponding to a state indicating whether or not a hologram has been formed and reproduces a bit of data corresponding to a state indicating whether or not a reference beam has been received by the light receiver when a reference beam is emitted to a recording position. The integrated unit of the optical head records and reproduces page data on a recording medium by recording and reproducing bit data on the recording medium by each of the recording and reproducing units.

Abstract:
This invention is a data storage system for accessing data stored in a data storage medium. The data storage system includes a motor-head assembly controlled to activate a vertical movement for loading and unloading at least a pickup head supported thereon to access the data medium in the data storage medium. For a specific data-storage system configuration, the motor-head assembly further includes a rotating motor for rotating the pickup head when the pickup head is loaded onto the data storage medium. In another system configuration, the data storage system implemented with a motor to move the data storage medium in at least one linear direction or for rotating the data storage medium. The motor-head assembly further includes a vertical-position locking hook for automatically pulling away the pickup head from the data storage media when the motor-head assembly is unloaded from the data storage medium. The vertical-position locking linkage further automatically unlock the pickup head in an unconstrained compliance state next to the data storage medium when the motor-head assembly is loaded to the data storage medium.

Abstract:
This invention discloses a plurality of substantially parallel data arcs disposed on a flat data storage medium. The data arcs include at least two linearly aligned servo-data fields disposed in an inner data arc and an outer data arc with an inter-arc distance. The servo data field disposed on the outer data arc is disposed with an offset from an identical radial-angle position projected from a radial center to the servo data field of the inner data arc. The offset is substantially proportional to the inter-arc distance and substantially proportional to SIN (&thgr;) where &thgr; is an angle between the identical radial-angle position and a linear-alignment direction between the two linearly aligned servo-data fields. Furthermore, the servo-data field on the outer data arc is disposed at a location with the offset from the identical radial-angle position in a direction toward a smaller radial angle projected from the radial center to the servo data field of the inner data arc.
